Putting in 6" can lights tonight in the kitchen. Supposedly there is an attachement you can purchase, for a drill, that is some sort of hole saw/cup combination that will not only cut the opening in the sheetrock for the light but the cup will catch all the insulation/debris that falls while cutting the hole. Does anyone happen to know what the official name of the tool is? I need to stop by Lowes or Homedepot tonight and get one, if its not to expensive. I just got the bid for having the ceiling and walls reshot, I almost had a heart attack.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't know the name of it, but I do have a suggestion. Just ask the sales rep at Lowes or Home Depot about it, and describe it just like you did here.

There is a palm router and bit used to cut in drywall but never seen a cup to catch falling debris.

Having been there/done that - I can recommend you seal off the room, tape off all vents and open the windows. No matter how carefull you are, the dust will get everywhere and on/in everything.

Depending on the size of the job, you might want to get a quote for a taper. Thats the worst and most miserable part of the job.

I think it's called a "hole saw" (?), basically a cup shape with sawblade teeth around the upper lip, and a small centering bit to start the hole and keep things anchored. The cup will catch the cutout piece and some of the dust, but some of it WILL fall outside the cup.

A closed hole saw, to be more precise (you can get ones with supports instead of a cup to make them lighter and less expensive).

Freddy, I will have to google it again. Took about an hour to find the thing. I think its a custom order only. Going to try home depot and lowes today. Tried harborfreight tools yesterday but they didn't have them. Got all the lines in last night, put strings on the celing to mark where the lights go. Now I just have to wait for my wife to decide that the 6" cans will be ok , or if I have to scrub the hole layout and put in 4" cans instead. ugh.

Maybe you could use the the 6" cans with a smaller cover?

I'll be retrofitting my bath with hi hats soon. It'll come in handy....Any excuse for a new tool.
