Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a JPEG compression program. I run a small website and have been using JPEG OPTIMIZER from xat.com. (Lost the file when transferring to a new computer and not sure if I should buy it again.) I need to not only compress the photos but also edit their size, too. Anyone heard of this program? Any other recommendations?

No need to buy the software again (assuming of course, that you had purchased the application legitimately). You should contact XAT and tell them you lost your release code (key) when you were transferring to a new computer. This is from the XAT site:

"If you have lost your release code and your email address has not changed send an email to code@xat.com (with code in the subject) and we will send you a new code. If your email address has changed send an email to the address below with details about your order e.g. address, order number etc. email: info@xat.com (include xat in the subject)."

Have you tried the freeware utility called JPG Cleaner?
JPG Cleaner an easy-to-use utility for cleaning JPG files from anything that is not picture data. You can choose pic (or folder filled with pics) and then the chose the data you want to wipe. It doesn't worsen the image quality, it just removes useless data. It works incredibly and it's a very simple and useful utility to optimize images for the web. Sometimes the extra non-image data in your JPEG is larger than the image information!

Also try Webpack which is an open-source freeware command-line tool for automatically packing websites by shrinking them down without affecting the way they look or behave. Among many features lossless packs GIF, JPG & PNG images (images are pixel-for-pixel identical, no quality loss).

    Good Luck!

I came across this program today: Shrink Pic which looks like it might be useful for compressing images. I have not had the time to thoroughly test this new program as Shrink Pic 1.2 was only released May 31 2006; but the author claims it can be used for "Upload photos to blogs and web galleries."

    From the developer's site:
"Shrink Pic will automatically resize your photos so that they fit and take very little storage space. You can upload photos using Internet Explorer or Firefox. Shrink Pic will detect these uploads and automatically shrink and compresses those photos for you."

In any case, it is available as freeware and the program looks very promising; so you might want to give it a try. ;)

    Good Luck!
