Recommended Partitioning for 300 Gig Drive

Got a nifty new WD 300 gig. Nice drive. However, when I ethernetted my 120 gig drives content to the 300, it occupied about 234 gig.

So I slapped my forehead and remembered all about clusters and how the larger ones would degrade storage efficency. Then I remembered partitioning.

So I'm thinking I want to partition this 300 beast into at least 2 drives -- one smaller for space efficiency, and one larger for speed efficiency (larger clusters give better speed efficiencys) cuz I'll store all my movies and South Parks and episodes of Enterprise on that larger partition.

So, anyone have any good ideas on optimal partition sizes?

Hmmmm I would probably split it into 3 groups of 100, definitely going for NTFS.

Oh and welcome to MG :D

Little off topic but Im really dissapointed in the new enterprise series, its grey its dull, the strories dont seem to have a proper ending,I put it below deep space nine and I wasn't a big fan of that and the intro music makes me want to buy gillette razor blades.LOL :D.Glad other people like it though or startrek would be dead. :(

When I posted I knew someone was goin to be politically correct and say that, but I wasnt gonna start a new thread about enterprise in off topic,
Well done of course you are right,i feel bad,I'll try not to pay any attention to the fun parts of peoples posts next time and I'll be sad and wont have any fun. :(

@Rikky, that was hilarious, keep up the good work.

@Lazamataz, I don't see how larger clusters would degrade storage efficiency that much... have you looked into your specific numbers at all? I'm not all that familiar with drives that size buy jeez, thats just about twice as much space required to hold the same data. I'd look into this if I was you. Again, I'm not too familiar with 300gb hdds so feel free to disregard this.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the cluster size. There won't be a big difference in speed the larger you go.

Hoo, with a drive as expansive as that, I'd be tempted by a Linux partition. oh yes ;) :D

The first part of the drive is the fastest because it is on the outside of the platter it moves fastest past the read head so put the stuff you use the most on the beginning of the drive.
