I want to upgrade my Desktop to SSD, and add some memory as well. I hesitate to just buy one that sounds good on Amazon, or maybe Newegg, so hoping I might get some suggestions/advice here? I'm not sure how much I'm willing to pay so I'd rather just see what you recommend first, then decide. I don't want cheap, I'd say usually, middle of the road is best for me:)

Thanks for any input you might have,

    I've always been told Samsung.
If I were buying, that's the brand I'd buy.

    Hi Plodr,

At first I thought "money" but then when I was looking down the link's site, I saw Samsung 970 Evo Plus which is definitely an ok price for me. I will read a bit more about it and want to thank you for the recommend.

To do the job properly you also need a 2.5 to 3.5 inch mounting bracket, easily available.

I'm sorry I missed the last couple of posts, and now I'm ready to buy both the SSD, and RAM. I don't think I should make another post so I'll try putting it all here together.

I am going to get the Samsung SSD, and then I searched out and found the right memory for my Toshiba Laptop L775D-S7132 here. I have a question as I don't understand my info in the "System Information" on the RAM. I would also ask your opinions on the info for that website info "link". It says 4GB is what I have which is what my system info says and it says I can add 4 more GB to the remaining slot. I'll attach a snip of what I'm confused about. I'm not sure I can add a 4GB RAM as the numbers are what is confusing me?

Also, to Earthling, I imagine you mean it's better to use a new bracket, and maybe the the SSD will not fit in the one with the HD?

    Thanks for your help! Capture.PNG

@plodr thank you for the recommend, that's what I'll get :)
@Goddess Bastet thank you for the links :)
@Earthling thank you for telling me about the bracket I'll need :)

I forgot to ask for brand recommends on RAM? I found 2 pack for 39.00 and also some for much more. Just not sure what to get. And I only need 4gb according to that website I cited. Thanks again, in advance

Oh geez, teach me to be trying to work off 2 computers ;( I'm sorry, I posted the RAM for my Desktop snip above. Here is my Laptop info on RAM:

This will scan your laptop and give recommendations for a replacement. You can buy from them or another with equivalent specs. I've used Kingston and G-Skill RAM without issues.

I always use Crucial too. Takes all the uncertainty out of adding more RAM.

I was checking Crucial out this a.m. @Goddess Bastet. I now want to go ahead and get 2 SSDs, one for Desktop like I was planning at the start of this thread ;) I'll go back and look at the Crucial, and see if it will work for both my computers. Thank you, and everyone for your help. I'm not getting my "notifies" so need to check my settings again for alerts ;) Denise

The "search" on that Amazon product site won't pull up my Toshiba. But that part number that starts with DDR3 is found on that other link to Memory Stock site. I'll go check out @Just Playin scan site at Crucial. I don't know if I want them scanning my computer, but it must be safe if it's recommended by geeks ;) I'll go take a look.

Oh shoot, my edit time ran out. Ok, Amazon is good for me, and the scan at Crucial came up with the same RAM I linked above. I don't need to replace old RAM do I and buy 2 of these? What do you all think? Thanks much, Denise

I’ve used the Crucial site in the distant past to scan my tower for RAM upgrade. It chose the correct one.
Many think/believe that RAM needs to be replaced in pairs but I didn’t & I had no problems. Even when I added another 4Gig of RAM to my current laptop.

Ok, that's the way I'm doing it too. I can always replace the old one later! I'll get it all ordered this a.m.

On the SSDs for both computers, can I use the old drives for backup (after I clean them off I mean)? Seems doable but I best ask :)

  21. Goddess Bastet

    Goddess Bastet First Sergeant

Yes you can use the old drives as backup. However I would recommend using third party imaging software rather than Windows own backup feature which will eventually be removed.

Ok @Goddess Bastet on the backup, you have a recommend on third party? I have the new SSD installed and in the Toshiba Laptop and just downloaded new Window 10 with media tool on MS. Everything looks good except the screen fades radomly, not too black, just dims slightly. Haven't figured it out or found an answer by googling yet. If it's ok to address it here, do you know what it could be?

I used some software yesterday I found here to help me compare differences in CPU (CPU-Z, Crystaldiskinfo, and Crystaldiskmark8) but I seem to be running way faster. Just don't have everything ready to go yet ;) When I removed the HDD there was already a bracket thank goodness because the one Amazon sent me, recommended, was huge, lol! My fault, I didn't look at the description, thought it went with that SSD.

BTW, using that same software, Crystaldiskmark8, my PC runs like a slug ;( I will make another thread if the mods want me to, or keep it all here. I'm going to order the SSD for the Desktop next but need to get the toshiba working right first ;)

Yes, as the inbuilt backup/image (Windows7 backup) is being removed.
Some devices have an auto/adaptive brightness feature:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/70157-enable-disable-adaptive-brightness-windows-10-a.html This may be what is causing your problem. Also ensure graphics card drivers are fully up to date.
Most likely the bracket is for a desktop SSD.
Crystaldiskmark will only inform you whether the drive is OK, Caution or Bad/Failing. Afaik it does not make the device run faster. It should also not be run on a SSD as it may shorted its life:

Ok, I'll get rid of the Crystaldisk. I usually just listen to Tim's but just popped in on another dude which pretty much put me to sleep, lol!

I'll go check our your link, and yes, that bracket may work with my Desktop then so won't send it back until I know. Not sure about what you first sentence means. I have Win10 now but I think the Toshiba had 7 when I bought it. I can't remember o_O Also, will check the drivers. Thanks so much @Goddess Bastet

I think I lost my marble, I could sware I answered this last message of yours @Goddess Bastet, lol!

So appreciate your info, I found I didn't have the 21H1 Build yet, and evidentally that's when the option shows up for that automatic display change. So I'll get both pc and laptop up to date on builds, then get back to you.

shoot, using 2 computers I got confused, lol!! I did answer you but didn't refresh on the other

keeeeeerap ;( I don't have Sensor (Light Sensor) in my Toshiba's (checked hidden as well) Device Manager @Goddess Bastet It's not on my Desktop either, so not sure it's the age of the Toshiba laptop, since my PC is new, well 2 years old I think now.

So sorry about all my replies, just ran out of "editing" time. I finally just shut the Toshiba for now but so I did search for adding Light Sensor but have a feeling that isn't doable from what I found. I did check Tenforums for that particular issue. I also tried to do a screen-recording for you but IObit (Ifun) didn't record the fading. It can happen every few seconds or more and it doesn't turn black, it just goes "more dim" then back again. One thing I thought about is the Night Light setting I leave on as a "bright" screen bothers my eyes no matter what time of day/surrounding lights. I'll check that and just wait til I get a reply, thanks again, I'm just hoping this isn't a non-fixable issue on my Laptop.

Windows 10 inbuilt backup feature is a leftover from Windows 7 & hasn’t been updated since that OS but has been included. Microsoft have decided to remove the backup feature & recommend users move to third party solutions.

I know the screen will darken when on battery but I somehow doubt that is the cause for you outdoorgal.
Does the screen just darken or does it ever brighten back up again?
If not the the LCD cable may be failing.

I have my laptop plugged in @Goddess Bastet and rarely move it from the desk. Maybe that isn't smart to do? The battery is charged, so I will try the laptop without it being plugged in. I'll keep searching too, might come up with more on it ;) Thank you, as always! Oops, forgot to add some likes for your help!

Oh geez, it's not doing it since I unplugged it!! I don't remember where I read it was ok to leave the dang thing plugged in, but this dimming thing is new and I've had the new battery for a couple months now??

I keep mine plugged in but if you do that then you should run the device on battery & let it deplete every few months - calibrate the battery.

  31. outdoorgal

    outdoorgal Sergeant Major

yes, it was to do with having it plugged in, I'm so sorry I didn't think of that earlier @Goddess Bastet It brightens back up, back and forth, but not doing it at all now. I would like to keep in plugged in though if you think that is fine? I can let it deplete like you say? Also, the cable is funky because it never has fit tightly into laptop. I'm always careful not to move the laptop. Maybe time to get a better cable. Hope it's not the "innie" hole in the laptop ;(

  32. Goddess Bastet

    Goddess Bastet First Sergeant

If the plug doesn’t fit well then it can disconnect which would place it on battery (for however brief a time) & the screen would dim. This would explain what is happening.
Is the charger the original one for the laptop? It shouldn’t be loose.

  33. outdoorgal

    outdoorgal Sergeant Major

Ok, plugged back in and no light dimming issue. It must be the cable or the slot for the cable :oops:o_O
