i am trying to record my old LP's on to my lap top (an hp pavilion with a 1 ghz AMD4 with a 18gig hd, and an ESS Allegro sound card and win xp) i am using polderbit software to record however it tells me i must use a line in connection on my lap top not the mic connection - is there a way to hook up a line in connection for a lap top??? what can i do??

    thanks jch3

    What kind of laptop??

I would think that there would be an audio in jack on there already!!!! Is there not audio jacks on the sides or back or wherever so that you can plug in external speakers?? If so then I would say that the line in jack would be right next to the line out jack!!

But like I said...what is the make and model of your laptop??

my lap top is an hp pavilion N5470.. it has built in speakers no jack for external onees - only a jack for headphones and jack for a microphone - is there an adapter that would plug into a usb port or into the microphone jack or something like that ????

    thanks again jch3

If your sending an analog signal from your record player to your laptop, use the headphone jack on the record player and the microphone jack on the laptop and link them up.The headphone jack on your laptop is a socket for external speakers, its an analog signal straight from your souncard or record on your record player called a pre amp out,the sound that comes out of the speakers is called post amp,its been amplified. The mic is an analog input straight into your soundcard, instead of the mic creating the electrical signal, the record player does, they use the same voltage/current. :)

Wow Rikky....that impressive!!!! I'm not much of an expert on audio (Since I'm hard of hearing, guess I never seen the urge to learn about it!! LOL) but I definately learned something and will keep that in mind!!

Guess we all learn something new everyday!!

Soooo...I should be able to do the same thing running from an old cassett Walkman (headphone jack) to my laptop mic input? I have the same problem: no "line in", just a mic input.

What you should do is start a new thread.

This one is a bit old.

Buy yourself a USB external soundcard with a line in. I believe soundblaster makes some.
