Do you recover with Win 7 backup and recovery device with the rescue disc like with Acronis, macrium paragon etc or,
do you recover my going to the program in Windows and recovering from there?
    Thank you

Hi peterr. If you have a Win 7 installation disk you would use that to restore a backup from another drive, providing you have actually made a backup that is. Windows Backup is not installed by default so many users won't have installed it and won't have any means of recovery other than to do a fresh install.

If it's a preinstalled system you would use your recovery disk or partition, though quite what you would do if the hard disk had failed I'm not sure. Maybe someone could clarify that.

B - U should B resting, either after your trip or in prep for it ;)

My software came preloaded from Dell. I created the rescue disc from the program much the same as I did for Marcrium.
I am taking your advice and using the 'bare bones' tech approach. I feel regular images with Macrium and occasional images with Win 7 program is just enough. It is not as though space were a problem with 2T.
I have been reading about that disc and it reads like it can do quite a bit.
Yes, I too hope someone who has used it will jump in and illuminate the subect. The fog is lifting but at first the various backups confused me.
1-system restore(if you have read my threads, you will notice I have had to "peel the onion" to get it to work).
    2-Win 7 backup and restore.
3-A substantial, reliable program for low level users like Macrium or Partagon.
4-the 2 dvds I created from the partition when I first got this machine. It restores all to the shape it was in when I first got it.
5-Dell data safe local or online backup and recovery @ $49.00
6- The already paid for Acronis TI home 2010 which I scrapped.
So, at first, I was staring at all of these options and confusing one with the other.
With help from folks like yourself, I am slowly reaching that point where the machine will be relatively secure and functional
    Peter
