HI, Im a newbie here and as such i have just downloaded a data recovery program to try and recover data from my old HD.
I wAs running XP, when it crashed saying that the files HAL.DLL and PCI.SYS were corrupted.I tried everything to get back in but it just kept turning itself off.So my uncle gave me his old pc which runs 98, so now i want to know how do i go about retrieving my old data from the corrupted HD, and can it be done on 98?.

    Many Thanks

    Jeff

Hi there, there are a few ways to get around this it just depends on a few things.

If you were to recover the data useing a NTFS data recovery tool do you have a hard drive the same size or bigger then the one on the xp computer to recover the NTFS file type data onto.

If no this will be a problem if useing a NTFS data recovery tool, but not all hope is lost.

Also there is a way to recover the system files system if you have a windows xp cd.

If you have the windows cd you can read up on how to do it here : Windows suport link here

Also it might pay you to read this page as well before you try the windows xp cd recovery and will give you a idea how 98,98se = fat32 and windows 2000, and xp = NTFS differ from each other. http://www.ntfs.com/

Another way is to add the xp hard drive as a slave to your other computer. When you have it as a slave drive you can copy the files you want to keep over, the only thing is that 98 works on FAT32 can not hold more then 4 gig files very well thats why they made NTFS as it will hold files bigger then 4 gig e.g. (movies) better then FAT32.

The few ways i have given here are not the only ways but might give you a better outlook on what you might have to do or how you can do it.

Also look in the http://www.majorgeeks.com as they might have software in there to help recover your data if you do not want to try any of them ways.

Hope this helps best of luck

Hi there, I have not used 98 or 98se for a long time but I know in xp you do this :

You go to my computer and right click on my computer and then go to manange then go to the storage after clicking on that in xp you should see disk managment in there you will see:( this is if your computer can see the HDD)

Volume: (nothing writen no D: or E:,e.c.t)
    layout : Partition
    Type : Basic
    File system :NTFS
    Status : Healthy (Active)
    Capacity :186.30 GB
    Free Space : 1.24GB
    % Free : 0%
    Fault Tolerance : No
    Overhead : 0%

    ( My slave drive )

Then you see In Disk Management, where it shows the NTFS Healthy (Active), right click on it and choose the option to change drive letter. Once you give the drive another drive letter you should be fine.

But in 98 or 98 se I do not know by memory if it is the same layout but if you find Disk Management it should be the same thing.

Hope this helps if not I know a mate that plays with 98se still that I will see in a few days, he will know the 98 98se layout better then me now as I have not used 98 or 98se for about 4 years he will tell me how to find this for you if you have problems.

Just post back if your not able to find it, best of luck till I hear back from you.

in 98 what you get whne you right click is ,MAP NETWORK DRIVE, which shows all the drives that arent taken, so maybe this is it.

But if my 98 recongnises it, will i be able to actually fix the problems on it, i ave hal.dll and pic.sys corrupted, i googled it and found a page on hal and how to fix it.

Have you connected your old hard drive to the Win98 machine?

Have you set the drive to be Master/Slave depending upon which IDE you have connected to?

If you have done the above you should be able to see your old hard drive in "My Computer"

From there you should be able to copy and paste any files that you wish to save onto CD or the Win 98 Hard Drive.

Scouse, i did that and it didnt show up at all.
I have set the HD from the XP to slave, and mine in 98 is set to master, but nothing showed up, yet when i ran a recovery program, that recognised it and it showed all the files.
Unfortunately i dont have a lot of spare time at the moment, i think the next time for me to try it will be thursday, but ill keep trying and make sure i have it set right.
