I had to format and reinstall windows xp on my hd two days ago due to a software problem. I was unable to backup my mp3 files or my digital camera jpegs beforehand. Is there any program out there that will recover these files for me? I tried a demo version of restorer2000 but I am not sure if I used it correctly as I was unable to find these files during the recovery process. Any help is very greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to MGs........

Sorry but I highly doubt you will recover them files after a format & re-install, the format would have written over the data once them the re-install a second time so most data would proberbly be too corrupt to recover!

It may have been possible before the format to have a Data Recovery Company recover the files BUT its not too cheap going that way....

The only way in hindsight would have been to get another HD and install XP on then hook up your faulty HD as a slave and try and recover the data.

maybe someone else has another option here BUT I really think your files are gone forever SORRY!

I concur.. it's not likely after a format and install that any files would be recoverable. Sorry.

I asked this earlier, but didn't get a response. So I'll just sidetrack this thread. :)

What software would you guys suggest to recover files yourself? Assume that the drive is still mechanically sound, and hasn't been rewritten, but that a simple slave to another drive doesn't work. I used to use PowerQuest Search & Rescue, but that doesn't exist anymore and doesn't support NTFS (or my version doesn't).

    Hm. Whoops. :)

I though I subscribed to the thread, but I guess I forgot. I assumed nobody responded.
