I am trying to use the recovery console and at the command prompt I type md tmp to make a new directory and it says access denied. I am trying to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents XP from starting. I'm following the instructions in the article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545&Product=winxp
When the recovery console comes up it never asks for the administartor's password, I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. However the administrator of the command does not have it set up to ask for a password when XP is starting.
The computer is a Compact Persario 5000 series. It is the 5310US model. It is 1.2 GHz Intel celaron processor. 256 MB snycDRAM. 40 GB hard drive. Thanks for the help!

Then it isn't going to work.

You have other options, if you have a cd writer :)

You can also try making a directory in windows.

But you cannot make or modify anything in C:\.
