a day ago I started to see this whenever I go to empty the trash.

when I clk OK, the trash does indeed empty, but clearly something is wrong.

I have run chkdsk and run Spybot search and destroy and all 'seems' to be good.

I don't even really know what the damn message is actually saying. Of course there is no 'desktop' in the recycle bin.

Which version of Windows are you using?

Try right-clicking the Recycle Bin and selecting Properties. Then depending on which version of Windows you have, you want to use the option of turning off the recycle bin on all the drives (something like don't use the recycle bin, delete item immediately).

After you have recycle bin turned off for all drives, reboot and then turn the recycle bin back on (you may have to reboot again for the space to be allocated to the recycle bin). See if you still get the error.

    you could try this.

    Or this.

    At the C:\> prompt, type:

    deltree /y recycled

Press Enter. A new Recycle Bin will be created when you reboot.

In addition to the above, couple of other shots:

Make sure no USB drives are connected - sometimes, the Recycle Bin spreads itself to any connected drives.

Also, I don't use Norton products, but isn't there a 'Protected Recycle Bin' thingy with Norton? Worth a look.

Thanks for your replies. In the meantime I found the problem and have fixed it.

Here is my whole tale about it:

Yeah, I've seen that a few times - not only can the Recycle Bin populate partitions on a physical drive, but discrete drives as well.

Good job - glad you got it sorted, and thanks for the feedback. :major

Thanks for you help and happy I could contribute something...

I am glad I did not use the suggested commands to remove the recycle bin, since clearly from what I have now seen that would not have fixed all the problems... I gotta say, chkdsk is pretty good :)
