Recycler Hell

Recently while scanning for viruses, Norton AntiVirus would always hang up on the same directory. I discovered an application in that directory named “kill,” thinking this was bad I moved it to my recycle bin where I left it for a couple of days to see if there would be any ill effects – nope. So, when I tried to empty the recycler it immediately pegs my processor to 100% and I can’t do anything. Once I reboot everything seems to work fine, with one exception I’ll go into in another post (I can’t display thumbnails in folders) as long as I don’t try to open the recycle bin. How can I delete this?

Does this only happen when you try to empty the Recycle Bin or does it do it when you open it as well ?

    Thanks for the reply.

This happens if I so much as touch the recycle bin, no matter how I try to sneak up on it, I can’t even view the properties, I also suspect the file in the recycler is approximately 2gigs and I believe that the recycler is full. Since I noticed this problem using my NAV, the first thing I tried was to disable the NAV, it doesn’t make any difference.

This might be worth a try...

Right click Recycle Bin > Properties > Global tab > Check Use One Setting for All Drives > Move Maximum Size... slider to 0% > Click OK

    This Sucks!

I was able to do 1 through 3 of xflat’s suggestion, I don’t have a Recycle Bin tab… I also tried alanc’s suggestion “Right click Recycle Bin > Properties > Global tab > Check Use One Setting for All Drives > Move Maximum Size... slider to 0% > Click OK” which had no effect, I also tried setting the Maximum Size…slider to 40% with no effect.

    MS Windows 2K Pro
    Service Pack 4
    P4 1.8GHz
    Dell Dimension 4300
    512MB RAM
    NVIDIA 64MB DDR GeForce3 Ti 200

Any other suggestions are appreciated. ~chuck

Maybe you want to try deleting the "Recycler" folder under every drive...
The contents of the bin can be found there, perhaps you want to take a look.
The folders are hidden, so you need to enable hidden files in folder options before you can see them.

First, maybe I missed it, but did he say if he had Norton "protecting" his Recycle Bin, and if so has he turned it off???

Safe Mode is worth a try.

Another approach (than trying to empty the Recycle Bin) would be to attempt to run Disk Cleanup on the drive in question.

Right-click drive > Properties > Disk Cleanup > (wait while old files are compressed if NTFS) > verify Recycle Bin is checked > OK

This normally will clear all Recycle Bin files.

I'm starting to wonder if there's an issue with corrupt data on the drive.

I would also try chkdsk /r and/or trying to delete the file from the Recovery Console.
