    What is the Recycler folder?
It's filled with files that begin with:
    \RECYCLER-1-5-21-1177238915-several more number groups-500\Dd....

it takes forever to get these through the virus scanner
    can they be deleted?
    what are they?

    Linda

LInda, do you mean Norton Protected recycle bin? If you use Nortons it can save deleted files for ages, until you clean out the Recycled Bin. I clean mine every day, but I would need to know more about your system and software before recommending you delete them. Bazza

PS: how many files are in that folder, how much space do they take up, and how far by date do they go back? have you ever cleaned out this folder before? when? Baz

Stupid me, I guess it is a program called Recycler, not nortons. Is that right? Any other users of that program, please step in. Baz

with that naming and those numbers that folder will be the XPs recycler folder which when NTFS is used will create those folders for each user on the system, you will also see them on each partition and HD you have installed, it is linked to the Recycle Bin BUT in some instances it doesnt always delete the files when you empty the bin.

MS info on differences between Recycle Bin and Recycler folder.
    http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/Q171/6/94.ASP&NoWebContent=1

you can have a look inside those folders but you will have to make them un-hidden as they are Hidden System files, goto Tools > View and tick "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and just 2 options below it un-tick "Hide Protected System Files" click apply adn you will then see the Recycler folders.

    Hello

I have a recycler problem and I have chased Microsoft for answers without any solution.

I have just replaced a HD and reloaded XP home [ legal copy ]. All works well with the exception off - that when I go into "My Computer" and I click on and try to open up the WD external HD I get the recycler error " Windows cannot find - Recycler\S-0-1-34-100119013-100000646-5973.COM " In the root of the WD HD is a folder - Recycler. Its empty. Should this " Recycler\S-0-1-34-100119013-100000646-5973.COM " be sitting in there?

When I reloaded XP I set the C drive to NTFS. I note that the WD external HD is FAT32. Should I convert the WD drive to NTFS or the C drive back to FAT32. Will lose I data/applications if I do this?

I can access the WD HD ok from explorer without any problems

I have run a registry cleaner and have run Spyware Doctor with anti-virus and my system reports back everything sweet!

    your help appreciated

    regards

    Alan

    Alan GM3MHD, welcome to MajorGeeks.
The Major doesn't like it if you tack your problem until someone else's thread - even if you feel your problem is the same. It also isn't a good idea to dredge up a thread from 2004.

    Start here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21
and click on the button on the left that says New Thread. Paste your post into its own thread and someone will be along to help with your questions/problems.

I apologize Alan GM3MHD. I get mixed messages on this forum. I'm told no one should add on to a thread started by someone else nor drag up a thread from years past. You followed the directions and promptly got your new thread locked!
It looks like we continue in this old thread until someone comes along and splits the new posts from the old.

I'll answer what I know. The WD drive set at FAT32 is fine. Usually externals are formatted that way for a reason. They will be able to be seen by Windows, OSX and linux. I'd say keep it that way - you might want to attach it to a different computer some time.

Recycler is the recycle bin on the external hd. I have never done this but apparently you can delete the items in the recycler directory from your Windows on your internal hard drive.
Right click your recycle bin and have a look around.

When you go into disk management (Admin Tools in the control panel) can you see the external drive? Does it have a drive letter?
You might need to take ownership of that drive. You previously owned it but it was linked to a different hd in your computer.

    Hi plodr

No Problems here with your response ..things happen lol

I have fixed the problem. As this problem only existed with the WD HD I reasoned that was where the problem existed and realised after much deep thought lol that when I reloaded XP and drivers that I had not seemed to have done so for the external hard drive. I had assumed that XP would have taken care of the recognition process.

I didn't have a installation CD for the HD so went to the WD site and downloaded their diagnostic stuff. I ran the supplied install stuff which included a repair facility. I ran this and lo and behold no "Recycler " problem.

So when in doubt read the instructions lol

keep up the good work and many thanks for your help

    regards
