Red X after installing Sun Java

In a suggestion from the Spyware section on keeping your computer safe and secure, I removed Microsoft Java using the MSJVM Removal Tool 1.0a (all seemed to go with no problems) and installed Sun Java from Http://java.com/en/ (also, no problems that I saw - just took a long time).

I am now getting a 'red x' where applets should be appearing -- example at http://football7.myfantasyleague.com/2004/home/47863 -- there should be a message crawl under the 'Black and Blue logo'.

    Any suggestions?

It seemed at first that may help but nothing much matches what I see when I go to the locations it directes me too. If it helps I have Windows XP at SP2 and IE6.

When I go to Start/Control Panel there is a Java but no Java Plug-In icon. I was able to find a Java Control Panel put not a a Java Plug-In Control Panel.

On the Manual Proxy Configuration instructions for IE, I can go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections Tab/ LAN Settings but can't click the Advanced button since it does not apply to dial-up sytems (thats me).

Can't do the Automatic Proxy Configuration because I don't have the adress info needed.

Do I not have Java configured correctly or am I missing some run-time libs? When I installed Java it setup a program that starts during boot - jrel1.5.0-02\bin\jusched.exe.

Another thing to try. Though, it may not work in your case...It did for me...
Goto control panel, double click on the Java icon
When the Java control panel shows up click on Network settings.

Make sure that "Use Browser Settings" radio button is selected. HIT OK.

Next, go to the Advanced tab. Click the + next to "<APPLET> tag support". Make sure that both "Internet Explorer" and "Mozilla and Netscape" are both checked. SMASH the OK button.

    Try it now....

    Did as instructed --

Went to Java control panel/Network settings/make sure that "Use Browser Settings" radio button is selected. HIT OK. Was already set.

Went to the Advanced tab/Clicked the + next to "<APPLET> tag support". Made sure that both "Internet Explorer" and "Mozilla and Netscape" are both checked. SMASH the OK button. ----- this whould not work since I don't have Moz or Net installed it wouldn't accept ---- had to leave only IE checked which it already was.

    Shadow,

Did as instructed Internet Options/Advanced tab/scroll down to Java(Sun) make sure the Use JRE.... Box is checked --- it was checked.

Was not sure I had rebooted since I installed so I did that -- no success... problem still exists.

Unistall Java from Add/Remove programs, and just to be on the safe side run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and select the JRE verson you installed if it is there. Then install Java with the Offline installer.

Interesting thing in the Add/Remove listings... I have J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 AND Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_4. Do you think I may have installed two versions of Sun Java (or maybe one was already on my PC) and do I Remove both of these items?

  11. wwalker555

    wwalker555 Corporal

I decided to Remove both versions of the Runtime Environments (v1.4.2_4 was installed a year ago and v5.0 was installed just a few hours ago) maybe they got overlaid a bit --- I also run the Installer cleanup utility. It is way to late tonight... I will reinstall the current J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 version tommorow and report back.

Thanks for the help tonight... please check back tomorrow in case I am still floundering... :)

This is now at the maddening stage... :( I downloaded and performed an offline install... everything went great. I checked to make sure that all Enable and Configure items were correctly setup.

When I tested the install I still get the box with a RED X... and this was using their test screen.

I am at a total loss... Shadow (or anyone) please help.

Which Norton's do you have, NAV or NIS? Also, do you have any popup, ad, or spam blockers installed?

    Hi Steve,

I have Norton SystemWorks Premier (which includes NAV), no popup or spam blockers (those seem to be handled ok by AOL) but I do have Spybot and CounterSpy and Ad-Adware which I use at least weekly.

Using instructions from the Spyware section of Major Geeks, I have downloaded a lot of other Spyware tools which I have not used yet (I am periocically getting a message from the Norton Internet Worm Protection that it is has detected and blocked an intrusion attempt -- blocking Bla Trojan) and they wanted me to run all of them to check if I do in fact have a bug). I havn't run them because I wanted to get up to date on my windows maint which I did over a week ago and install the safer Sun Java, both were also at their instructions.

Make sure your firewall isn't blocking Java applets.

    Hi Shadow,

I was starting to look into that due to the email you had previously sent. When I installed Norton System Works one of the directions was to allow Norton Internet Worm Protection be my firewall and not the Windows firewall.

I installed my lastest verion of NSW back in Feb and now I am trying to see how to do what you are suggesting. Unfortunately, I can't figure that out.

Not much info is provided by Norton, so if you have any ideas please let me know them. I'll report back if I can revert back to the Windows firewall or change the Norton Internet Worm Protection.

    1. Open your Symantec desktop Internet security or firewall product.
    2. Click Security.
    3. Click Custom Level. The "Customize Security Settings" window appears.
    4. Look at both the Java applet and ActiveX boxes. If either or both are set to block, lower the security level and then click OK.
    5. Try to connect to the Web page again.

If elements of the Web page are still being blocked, there may be a Web rule that is blocking scripts, Java applets, Active X controls, or referrer information.

    1. Open NIS or NPF.
    2. Click Options, and then click Internet Security (or Personal Firewall).
    3. Click Advanced Options.
    4. Click the Web tab.
    5. Click "Add Site."
    6. Type the URL for the Web site that contains that Web page. For example: www.test.com may be the Web site that contains the page www.test.com/samples/sample1.html.
    7. Click OK. This step adds an entry to list for that Web site. Note that if the Web site was already listed, this action does not add another entry.
    8. In the left frame, click the name of that Web site.
    9. In the right frame, click the Active Content tab.
    10. If Script is set to Block, change the setting to Permit (or to "Allow all script to execute," depending on your NIS or NPF version).
    11. If the first box for Binary Executables is set to Block, change the setting to "Allow Java applets to execute."
    12. If the second box for Binary Executables is set to Block, change the setting to "Allow ActiveX controls to execute."
    13. Click the Privacy tab.
    14. Look at the checkbox "Use these rules for <name of Web site>".
    * If the box is not checked, then this setting is not blocking referrer information. Continue with step 16.
    * If the box is checked and the Referer box is set to Block, change the setting to Permit.
    15. Click Apply, and then click OK. This closes Advanced Options.
    16. Click OK again, and then close the program.

None of this applies to NSW. There is no Security item to open (therfore, no 'Customize Security Settings' when I open NSW. I can alter Script Blocking (it was on -- I turned it to off) but this didn't help. I tried to turn off Norton Internet Worm Protection as my Firewall and returned to the Windows Firewall -- this didn't help either.

I know this problem has to be some simple thing we (I) am over looking but I am at my wits end... :(

This had to start with spyware or it's removal, kind of retrace your actions for us.

    1. What version of SystemWorks do you have, is this new?

    2. Did you have a different firewall or anti-virus installed before sp2?

Something has been changed or installed during all this that is causing the problem. Just a brief explanation of events and changes made before and after you experienced problems.

I noticed this when I first submitted the question 5/26 -- at that time, following the instructions from a sticky in the Spyware section, I decided to remove MS Java using MSJVM Removal Tool 1.0a and install Sun Java from http://java.com/en/

My version of NSW is Premeir 2005 which was install in mid-March. In mid-Feb I upgraded my Windows XP system from a very out of date SP1 to SP2. Everything went very smooth during both of those installs. Back on May 17 I updated my Windows XP system to include all outstanding patches that were published after my install of SP2 --- again no problems.

After the install of NSW in March, I started to periodically get a message when I connected to AOL that Norton Internet Worm Protection has detected and blocked an intrusion attempt (Bla Trojan). I sent in a question to the spyware section of Major Geeks around the first of May to see if this was a problem or just Norton properly doing its job.

I was instructed to follow the steps laid out in that previously mentioned sticky and prepare my system to be scanned in detail for spyware. First I downloaded the following Spyware (Already had Ad-Aware Se, I installed Ad-Aware Vx2 Cleaner Plug-in, Installed CCleaner, Already had Spybot (but I did perform the Immunize feature at that time), installed SpywareBlaster, downloaded McAfee AVERT Stinger, downloaded CWShredder, downloaded Kill2me, downloaded about:Buster, downloaded HSRemove.

None of the above items were actually run just downloaded in preparation for running (except for activating the Immunize funtion of Spybot).

Before doing all of the scanning I decided to update my Windows XP system and swap out the Java software as mentioned above.

After I swapped the MD Java to Sun Java and noticed the problem, I tried the things suggested in this thread with no success, removed the prior install of Sun Java, reinstalled it and tried everything mentioned later in this thread.

That is everything done this year, sorry for the long narrative. I will be back on tomorrow, thanks for the help (my wife is verbally beating me up for staying on the PC so late the last two nights) :) Thank you guys for all of this help -- I will do anything that you feel will help. Please hang in there with me because otherwise, I am lost.

Do you think it would help if I used 'system restore' to put the system back before I started removing/adding the different Java software -- which for me would be 5/25?

I am working into that now (found page for reinstalling MSJVM at -- http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3942.html). I have also removed Sun Java, and the following products -- Ad-Aware VX2 Cleaner Plug-in, CCleaner, SpywareBlaster... everything that was installed since 5/19 when I was getting prepared to do a major spyware scan as instructed in the Spyware section.

Will be back in a moment with the results.

Ran the reinstall of MSJVM -- at first it displayed a quick message that it could only install over existing software (I think - the message was on and off the screen quickly) then it displayed a message that the install was sucessful... but I still have the same problem boxes with red x's.

Since you will be out for awhile, I'll go out and do a couple of errands also. Will be back in about 1 hour.

Okay, the agony appears to be over.

For the third time I installed Sun Java 1.5.0, from http://java.com/en/. This time I used a Manual install (the last time it was a Offline install and the time before that was an Automatic install. The only additional change I made was to change an AOL setting to Never Compress Graphics (of course, the setting I had (only compress graphics when I do not have a broadband connection) was like that probably for years.

I also turned Script Blocking back on in NAV without a problem. I don't think I was able to successfully reinstall MSJVM as suggested by Shadow but it appears that that is irrelavent.

Quite frankly, I still don't know what caused this problem... after a week or so I will re-install the spyware tools suggested by the people in the spyware section and check out my system for the cause of the periodic message I get when I connected to AOL that Norton Internet Worm Protection has detected and blocked an intrusion attempt (Bla Trojan). But right now I think it is best to just let everything settle (hopefully nothing else concerning Java with screw up again).

I want to thank Shadow_Puter_Dude and Matacumbie for their thoughts and suggestions and for just being there. If there are any questions either of you guys have about what I did or how, to help you know more if this ever occurs again, please ask.
