Red "X" Problems

I hope I am posting this in the right place...I'm new here.

The problem I'm having is this:

When I go to "CERTAIN" sites (Not all it seems),
I get red X's instead of pictures at times.

Sometimes it will load after awhile and sometimes it will not even load after refreshing.

I tried to understand solutions from many sources, but to no avail.

I HAVE cleared my .tmp files, cleared the cache, cleared History,cookies (Except for ones kept for certain sites usually around 20 or so), checked Java installations, defrag with Diskeeper, I'm at a loss what to do next.
I also get "Done but with Errors on page" and can't load links on certain pages too.

This is what I have:
Dell 8100 Intel P-4 1.4
640 RDRAM G force 2
Win XP Pro Win Office Pro
McAfee anti-Virus/Zone Alarm Pro
ad-Subtract Pro (Disabled when trying to load problem pages)

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

that's a tough one.. You've pretty much tried everything I would have suggested you to try. Though, the only thing that bugs me is that "script error", which is inherantly a javascript issue. You ad subtract software may interfere with it, even though it's disabled.. I remember Marcie30 having a problem with that software and she just discontinued using it. Have you tried the latest JVM from Sun? They updated it recently (past day or two)

it could also be that those pictures are being executed by javascripting and because it's failing, the pics aren't showing up. The script could be buggy as well. Can you post an example site that is giving you problems?

 

Try this under regedit install if you don't have it

I'd be curious to see if that worked, though in all my time on the net, i've never had to increase my max connections..

 

Well it worked for me Kodo on Win98Se.
My settings before were at 54/40,even had them at 99/99.
Dropped them down to 10 and ended my frustations.
By the way the settings for a or 10 are recommened for XP

 

I believe that 10 is the default..

O.k. The site is www.cokemusic.com .

I can get into the site, but when I go to the part of it that has interactive sessions (Coke Studios,Pop Quiz) the link inside the site just does nothing, I get a message like
"Object Expected" and the URL for the end of that link ends in .jsp
a lot of people were using this site and it was working at one time....

That's the problem with the scripting but I don't think it has anything to do with the red X problem. Sorry to pound you guys with two problems.

1. Yes I have the latest Java
2. I even tried disabiling McAfee,Ad-Subtract, AVG , AND Zone Alarm.
When I say disable, I mean totally shut down.

Hope this sheds a little light on this.

 

and just checking.. are you using Internet Explorer? what version?

You might want to also check to see if you have a hosts file that is blocking ADs. That would cause red X's too.

Perform a search on your computer for the word

Host

and see if anything comes up. If you do find a host file (no extension), open it in notepad to see if it contains anything.
If it does, move the host file to your desktop and try surfing again (Close and reopen IE first).

I did find :
1 file in there named "HOSTS" without any extension

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc 21Kb URL:FileProtocol

This file had a list of sites on it

Is this what you are talking about??

You want me to take this out of the registry and put it on my desktop??
How should this effect the running?

What might it fix?

tAll your going to do is temporary move it to the desktop for now.
try surfing again (Close and reopen IE first).If it works fine if not move host back to registry again.

I moved the file to the desktop and when I did, I was not able to get online. Tried a few ways with same result.
I put the file back and all is back to normal (getting online and all)
Red X , still a problem,
Done with erors still a problem.

I am not trying to be pushy, I just hope someone will read the posts and see something that they know a answer for
I do appreciate your input!
These issues are driving me nuts!

Hello, How do I change the settings? Because I'm having the same problem!

 

When did this start happening?

How long have you had McAfee anti-virus installed, what did you have before that?

I tried the site you mentioned and I would check into things like Ad Blockers, Spam Filters, etc. that you have or have had and uninstalled.

Do you mean we have to uninstall ad blockers? what about shut it down?

No. You don't have to uninstall anything, shut it down and see if that works. If not, check the settings you have for the different programs like anti-virus, firewall, and any third party ad or spam blockers.

I would start with my firewall, you should have some settings you can change or disable under something like options, internet, spam, etc.

If that doesn't work and you have ad blockers installed just temporarily disable them ( usually right-click on the icon and disable ). They will probably have an option on settings also, if disabling works you might be able to sort thru and see exactly which setting is blocking.

Hope I am not confusing you. If I am just tell us what anti-virus, firewall, ad blockers, etc. you have and we can go from there.

No you are not confusing me..but I use windows fire wall and I did shut it down but I still see the red x's..and I use block pop ups under -Tools >>Internet options...etc- and i still can't see the pictures when i shut it down. I think I'm confusing you now lol.

I did what you said there and I found (image.gif) is already written there but in (.jpg) I found it (image .jpeg) -I thought they were the same?- i changed it to (image.jpg) but i still have the same problem..Sorry.

No additional ideas about how to try to fix your IE, but what about trying another browser to see what happens? Firefox is great, can be downloaded for free and, if it works, you may find you like it better than Internet Explorer. And if Firefox shows the same problems you may get some additional error information from it that will help you find the source of the error/problem.

 

Thanks Eezak I've tried mozilla and I've got the same problem. but I'll try firefox where can I download it from?

 

waxace, you said that moving the 'Hosts' file from its location to the desktop resulted in you not being able to get online.

You also said that the Hosts file contained a list of sites in it.

Can you try the following please.

1. Copy the Hosts file to another location for safety.

2. As you know the Hosts file can be opened with a txt editor ie Notepad. Open Hosts. The contents of Hosts is composed of MS blurb at the top and then after that it says 'For example:' and lists 2 examples underneath.
You may in addition have a line that says local host with an IP address immediately under the 2 examples.

Firstly, do you have anything underneath that last line ie local host. If so delete everything below it and save the file then try IE again and see if that did the job.

That is correct I don't have "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server" and
"MaxConnectionsPerServer" under

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]


Is this a problem?
