First, thank you for reminding me hacked versions of an operating system is not the best route and I appologize for any wrong doing before. As a student I needed an operating system and while I could get to a P2P network and an ISO file... anyway, I now have a true version of Windows XP Home Edition and have a few questions of the Home Edition...

What features are missing from home ed? I know of the backup is not installed and now have it on the computer.

Just installed Internet Explorer 8 on the pc and the short cut in the context menu 'open in a new tab' is not an option. Can someone give reason and tell more about this?

    Hi

This is a good write up on the differences between Home and Pro, most are things you may need in a network and corporate environment, to the likes of EFS, Fax support to Active Domain and Dynamic disk support, not a great deal of things you may need in a home user scenario.

As for IE8, do you have any 3rd party add-ons installed, may wish to run IE in its no-addons mode, found in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and see if its ok now if it is a 3rd party add on could be the cause, disable any non Microsoft ones and see if IE ok, if it is then enable one at a time until you find the ones that breaks the context menu, info HERE on managing add-ons

Also reset IE, open in its normal mode and click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab and Reset at the bottom, restart and try again.

I don't run IE 8 but what happens when you hold down the ctrl key while clicking a link? Does it open in a new tab?

I found this but the tip is more than a year old so I don't know if it works because it mentions that the menu item is at least seen.

Thank you both for some leads, I will be reading up on these to see where they lead.

It is a fresh installation. Any programs asking to install a tool bar has been unticked including ZoneAlarm's request to add a toolbar. Adobe has added support for Shockwave and Reader then there are, from what I see, are things added for Microsoft.

I did a reset; I now have back the ability to hold down Ctrl plus a mouse click to open in a new tab, still no context menu.

I had the ability to use the Ctrl + left mouse click and had worked then it stopped. I switched back to the default settings for tabs and it is back, still no context menu.

"Open Link in New Tab" not shown in context menu for IE8

Created a thread but have had little result or turn out.

System has Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.

From other versions of XP I can right click on a link and open to a new tab. In my build however I am unable to right click with the option to open to a new tab available, only showing open to a new window.

Are there registry entries for the two involving the context menu?
Where are the entry(ies) located in the regedit?

I would like to enable the feature, please refer to the link provided above for proposed tries and answers given. So far I have not found a solution to enable the "Open link in a new tab" from the context menu (right click submenu).

    thank you....
    robert
