I've done all the steps to clear this. TDSSKiller stops at 80% and hangs system solid in normal mode; in safe mode it BSOD as it does when I start with Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt and start it. I one time, tried the fixmbr that someone else tried but it didn't appear to help. Logs all appear clean but IE redirects. Firefox does NOT appear to redirect. In IE I can search but when I click on a result, I go somewhere else and about 4 pages get loaded into history. First 4 logs on this msg - SuperAnti log on next altho I think it found nothing.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Did you download and use the current version of TDSSkiller.exe from our link. What you are stating sounds like an issue that existed with an older version of the program when a certain vintage TDL infection existed.

I'll certainly try it...I'm not sure now where I got it. I'll report back

    Okay. Also do the below.

How do you connect to the internet ( cable, DSL, other )? Do you have a router between your PC and your ISP's modem?

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Please do not run TDSSKiller anymore unless I ask you to.

Do you have your Windows XP boot CD that we could use to boot to the Recovery Console?

Okay then boot your PC from the CD and get into the Recovery Console. Once you are at the command prompt of the Recovery Console. Enter the below command to see if we can get TDSSKiller to run in the command prompt.

    C:\TDSSKiller.exe

    Let me know what happens.

Whether it works or not, once back in normal Windows, run the below.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

just for clarification - do I drop tdsskiller.exe into C:\ before I shut down and boot fm CD?

  16. nancyjo

    nancyjo Private E-2

I did put the tdsskiller on the c: drive at the root before I shut down and restarted off the CD. When I hit the enter key, it says "The command is not recognized. Type HELP for a list of supported commands." (XP Media Center, SP3 OS). When the recovery console finished loading, it showed me c:\windows> prompt.

I typed c:\tdsskiller.exe and I got the above; then I did a cd .. to come out to c: and tried again. same result. I'll restart and try MBRCheck.

Try downloading a new copy of TDSSkiller.exe and save it directly into your C:\Windows folder. Then boot to the Recovery Console again. Then at the C:\Windows> command prompt, see if you can just run TDSSKiller.exe directly.

OH MY GOSH - its gone; not quite the way you told me, but I'll tell you how. I did install Vipre Antivirus Premium but that may not have been a crucial step. Vipre did find a few more viral elements - but when I started/used IE the redirect was stil there. The big fix was creating a Kaspersky Rescue Disk (see this link) http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk/all?qid=208282484. Boot up using the Kaspersky Rescue disk to start up the computer - it will update itself during the process and then will scan the boot sector and for hidden processes. It found and removed infected c:\windows\system32\drivers\acpi.sys (it was named something like win32.Rloader) and I believe replaced it with a clean copy. With my situation, I could not run the TDSSKILLER from regular or safe mode - it went to BSOD. I tried copying the TDSSKILLER.EXE file to the root C:\ and to C:\windows and starting fm XP CD into Recovery Console but I could not run it from recovery console. When I tried running it I got it says "The command is not recognized. Type HELP for a list of supported commands." When I googled for "run .exe from recovery console" I found the direction to create a Kaspersky Rescue Disk. It was the only way that I could get TDSSKILLER to run - which was included in the rescue disk updates. Whew! thanks so much for the assistance!!!

You do have to do one more round of Kaspersky TDSSKILLER to get the last parts out - running it from Rescue CD killed hidden part but running from the desktop got the rest. Then I actually did the whole round of Combofix, then Malwarebytes, then Superantispyware to be confident it was gone. All is well now

Thanks for the info. Yes we have used Kaspersky's Rescue CD and also another scanning tool from them to help with this kind of TDL infections before. We even have Kaspersky's CD along with many other CD ( and also other tools ) in our bag of tricks. See: Alternative Scans which is given as a helpful link towards the end of the READ & RUN ME cleaning procedures for each version of Windows.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
