Problems first noticed when ads and music came out of my computer speakers. Pulled up task manager and saw about 8 different iexplore.exe processes, but had only one browser open. Received multiple Data Execution Prevention error message pop ups. In addition, when I searched in either Firefox or IE the selected search result link redirected me to some random site.

I'm running XP. I have done the following without success.

    1. rebooted in safe mode, ran superantispyware then spybot with no infections
    2. ran CCleaner and CCleaner for registry and fixed problems

    3. Completed Steps 1, 2, & 3 as provided in "hijacking and other redirection problems - MajorGeeks Support Forums"

Pulling my hair out. Any help would be great.

FYI - after completing Step 1 redirection stopped, but came back. Still occurring.

No problem, but you need to finish the rest of the instructions in step 5

I decided to go another route and not follow the malware removal steps. Instead I uninstalled java, IE 8, and firefox. Installed Google Chrome. No more redirection. I'll follow the malware steps in the next few weeks.

If you really have malware, this will not fix your problem. Also you will not be able to get Windows Updates without IE and you should not be using an outdated version of IE. My experience is that IE8 and 9 are more secure than other browsers. It has been around longer. Newer browsers typically have more security holes that malware is now learning to exploit. Malware did not bother with browsers like Chrome and Firefix when not enough people were using them. Now that these browsers have a more widespread use, we actually run into more infections/problems with them then we do with IE.
