Hi there. About 6 or 8 weeks ago I got the first virus I've had in more years than I can count. It was one of the "windows security" type viruses. It took over very quickly and I was forced to restart into safe mode. From there I ran MBAM and SAS and that seemed to have cleaned me up. As to what I was doing when I contracted this... I signed into Hotmail. Truly. Nothing else was open. For a while I thought I'd gotten it and that I was ok but really ever since I have been contracting one thing after another and I'm not doing anything unusual (same things I do online that I have for years). It's like I'm super vulnerable or something. I did some research and started wondering if I had a rootkit or something of the sort. So last night I got hit bad again and I'd had enough. I decided to post here so I went ahead and ran all the procedures recommended in the Read Me thread and will be attaching my logs below.

I'm running a full and updated version of McAfee and as I rule a periodically run one or both of MBAM or SAS every month or so. I also use CCleaner periodically. I am using Vista Ultimate and keep the UAC active and I believe the Windows Firewall is active as well. After my research this time I've learned that I probably don't have the best defense system going though it seems I was using good programs for "after the fact" problems. Once we get this cleared up I'll be following the suggestions on the "keeping clean" thread.

Oh, and yes I did all of the suggestions in the "google redirect" thread and it didn't help a bit. *sigh* I doesn't appear these programs found much so I'm not sure what's going on. I hope one of you can find something I'm not seeing (wouldn't surprise me as I'm not familiar with these final three programs' logs).

    Thanks for the help!!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

No! You skipped running MBRcheck and you should do this now and attach the requested log.

You should not have this enabled because you already have McAfee's Firewall enabled.

After attaching the log from MBRcheck, continue with the below.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - Invalid registry found

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

My mistake. I had already run the MBR and just forgotten the log. I've attached it. I will continue with your directions in the last post.

Oh and no, I double checked and apparently I didn't have Windows firewall on.

Good. Your MBRcheck log is clean, thus my fix below is all we have left to do. ComboFix already removed a source of redirection issues when you first ran it.

Your logs are clean. Are you currently having any malware problems?

Not at the moment! I've not been doing much with it though as I had everything disabled until we were through running things. I'll reboot and bring everything back up and start doing my every day stuff and find out. I'll report back if I have any trouble. If not, thanks a million! You guys are awesome!

Ok I'm running Vista but when I type in "combofix /uninstall" in the search command nothings comes up. Help?

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes because that is not how to uninstall it. The below is.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Perfect! Everything is working great now. I set up a new protection plan based on the recommendations on the keep clean thread and everything seems to be doing well.

I only have one remaining question. For some reason I am unable to access any page on Angelfire. Is this possibly because one of these programs has it set to be blocked? If so does anyone know how to change that?

    Thanks!!!

Not that I would know of. You should check to make sure that you have not blocked accessing the site somehow. Make sure that your firewall allows it to be accessed.

I found the culprit, IObit Malware Fighter. If I exit that program everything works fine. Unfortunately I can not find a place to view what sites they're blocking to see if I can unblock them. *sigh* I guess I'll have to uninstall it. It's a shame because I rather like the program in some ways but I'm not willing to live with Angelfire and Freewebs being blocked with no option to change it. rolleyes

    Thanks again!

You may not be the only person having those kind of issues with IObit Malware Fighter. See:

    http://forums.iobit.com/showthread.php?t=11105

I don't think you need it anyway with the full security suite that you have from McAfee. In fact, it may not even be a good idea to run this along side McAfee.
