Moved to software. I suggest you run Memtest on your ram.

    Grab MemTest here http://majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html
Do you know how to burn an ISO?
Boot the CD you burned and let it check your computer's memory.

I'll give ISO instructions, if you have never done anything like this.

Thanks for that - a few quick questions on iso ( see att.)- which files would I actually burn to cd(dvd?) & would I use the Nero setting as shown in jpeg4?
    thanks again

I don't use Nero but looking at your last screenshot, click on the ISO tab not the multisession tab you currently have open.

You are going to burn the .iso NOT drag and drop the files inside the .iso that your winrar shot is showing.

but isn't the .ico file a zip file which HAS to be extracted before using? -and is extracting a zip file the same as opening it?

    NO!
An ISO is an image. Let Nero burn the ISO; you'll end up with a bootable CD which is what you want. If you burn as a "data" CD, it will not be bootable.
That's why I asked if you know how to burn an ISO. It is not like burning a data disk or a music or movie disk.

my confusion is the zip file-and has always been
    - when i download a zip do I open or extract - is it the same
    - when it opens/extracts to a folder & I have several files is it components of a programme or -as in memtest - do I just go with the .exe file?
do i burn that with an iso mode in nero?
    - do I burn another component to nero with a .iso suffix
    - do I burn as a standard cd because it's an.iso file & it will therefore activate as a iso of its own accord?
-do I burn the iso file in iso mode in nero (which is what I did & it didn't work)
    - the iso looks like a zip file - does that mean that it IS a zip file or is it saying that this file file will be a iso file when you extract/open which brings me back to the 1st question
    -thanks again

Right click and unzip the file. You will get an ISO. Burn the ISO.

Thanks but I've done that 5 times -I've changed the set up to make the cd kick in first - it makes the appropriate whirring noise - it's an external cd drive incidentally - just to confirm -you say "You will get an ISO. Burn the ISO. "-do you mean choose the cd-rom (ISO) mode as opposed to the CD-ROM (Boot) mode in Nero? - is there a test for the cd drive to see if it can do that particular job? ( it opens ordinairy cd's when it needs to)

Have you booted any CD from this? Not all computers are able to boot from an external CD drive before windows loads.

No -I haven't booted from it but in setup it identifies the make of that particular burner & seems to 'accept' it - I'll try it on another pc & see if it works-thanks

Trying on another PC doesn't really solve the problem. If the original PC is not able to boot from a USB drive, then you can not force it to.

The majority of my computers (currently 7 in our home) can not boot from a USB device; that is a function of the motherboard. In fact, one is so old, that it can only boot from a floppy drive not the internal CD drive.

it was more to see if I burned the cd properly & therefore see if another pc will boot straight to memtest
