I am currently trying to get rid of very persistant spyware. I was told to post a problem I am having when I try to boot into safe mode.. I'm coping a reply from a thread on the spyware board of the problems I am experiencing when I try.

When I press the f8 key to bring up the safe mode selection screen, I am able to choose safe mode. After I hit enter it doen't go into safe mode. Instead I get a black sceen and a list that includes this line in every line of the list.....
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)Partition(1)Windows\system32\Drivers\ after the drivers portion of the line the word is different in each line. There are about 35 lines. Each with a different ending. Then it goes back to the black screen saying windows did not load properly and again I choose the safe mode option and the same thing happens. I did this about 10 times in a row and nothing changes. If I don't choose any option windows loads normally. I don't see any error message.

Any help you can give is appriciated. Thanks

hmmm I don't see any updates for my driver (it is pretty old). Does that mean my video card isn't working when I boot into regular mode? Is the default video card in XP worthwhile. I'm not familiar with computer parts.

Your video card is probably working okay, but for some reason the driver is causing a problem when you boot into safemode. Could you tell me what the manufacturer of the card is and the model number and what driver version you are using? You can get this information by right clicking on the "my computer" icon on your desktop or start menu and selecting "properties". Select the hardware tab, and then click the button that says device manager. In the application that pops up, double click on "display adapters" and let me know what the name is of the display adapter listed there. Then double click on the display adapter shown and go to the tab that says driver. Let me know what the driver provider, driver date, and driver version is. Let me know if you can't figure these instructions out - feel free to PM me.

driver provider : ATI Technologies Inc.
    driver date: 7/3/2001
    driver version : 6.13.10.5019

Thanks for the reply. When I click on the link it tells me my session has expired. I will look around the site and see if I can find the info to update it.

I'll host the file here: driver

Download this driver and do not install the file - save it to a location you are not likely to lose the file. Now, if you are running windows xp or windows 2000, then we should create a sytem restore point. This can be done by clicking the start menu button, then going to "all programs", then going to accessories, then going to "system tools" and then click on "system restore". Click on "create a restore point" in the application that pops up and click next. Enter a name for your new restore point if you wish and click the "create" button. That should do it.

Now, we have to uninstall your video driver. Go back to the display adapters in the device manager (see earlier post). Go to the driver tab, and then click the uninstall button. Once the driver uninstalls, then restart your computer. After it loads up, restart once again, and then try to enter safe mode this time.

Provided you can enter safe mode this time, then you can make whatever adjustments are necessary to remove the spyware from your system. Then, boot into windows normally and install the driver that you downloaded from the start of this message.

If you run into problems, you can run system restore and restore the computer to the current state running the restore point you created earlier.

    Good luck.
