Trying to reformat external drive. Going to disk management in Win XP, get the error "the dependency service or group failed". Tried merging the diskmgmt.reg files as suggested on Microsoft website to no avail. Any help appreciated.

    Hi

Have you in the past tweaked the services list? if so or even to check you need in Disk Managment the Plug n Play, Logical Disk Manager, Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service and Remote Procedure Call (RPC), and make sure their Started and Startup Type is Automatic, reboot and try again.

Can you format via Explorer, open My Computer and right click > Format Drive?

What drive is it and have you checked if maker has format utility, some do.

thanks for reply. Haven't tweaked services, don't know how to put the D Mgmt, plug n play, logistical d manager etc into place or ensure them to be in startup. I have a 1 Terabyte Maxtor Onetouch4 external drive. Have tried all their suggestions to resolve the issue of "win failing to write" error. Tried to reformat using Explorer, but it would go for hours and not succeed. Maxtor tech support wanted me to do this thru disk mgmt.

    Hi

Click Start > Run and type services and hit enter, then look down the list for those services I mentioned, and double click the first one found and this brings up the properties page, and you will see a Start button (click that to start the service if not already started) then you will see a title called Startup Type and a dropdown list choose Automatic and then click apply, do this will all of them if found.

    Reboot and try again.

When I click Start > Run, and type services and hit enter, nothing happens.

Almost positive as use it daily, but likely try this in XP as it may not just like services but services.msc (note the dot between services and msc) if that doesnt work then goto Control Panel > Administrative Tools and Services is listed there.

Thanks. Will look at this tomorrow more and let you know. I did find that Local Disk Manager Administrative is listed as manual.
