I am running Windows Millenium upgrade from Windows 98 SE. I have, via removing Gator spyware, damaged some windows files. I have located the exact files. Among them are is the WINSOCK .dll, I want to replace them with good ones. Reinstalling Win ME didn"t do it. I tried to reinstall Win 98SE but a message comes up "you are running a newer version of windows. You must remove Win ME to continue." Sounds like a bad idea to me! I tried to replace the files in windows but they can not be deleated or renamed. I understand that I can do what I want in DOS but have never tried that before. Is there an easy way to solve my problem?

normally i would recomend extracting the file from the winme cd, but ive had problems with doing that in win me before, so i would agree with robo and back everything up and start afresh :)

Go to Start/Srun and type in sfc and that should take care of the problem.

can you do a re-install like Windows xp?

and I agree with Robo... any time you install one operating system over another (yes, I know M$ says its an upgrade, yada, yada) you open cans of worms that you may not discover till quite some time later

Thanks for the help. Sounds like I really stepped in it this time. My hardware won’t support XP. I do have Win 2000 pro as an option. I have never done f-disk and reformat before. I can back up my files but I’m not sure how to back up my drivers. Any help you could offer would be great would be great.
