Is there a way to wipe off any traces of win xp off the HD, i.e. FDISK C: and reinstal the thing from scratch?

In need of a fresh start,

put your WindowsXP disk into the drive and boot from it.

in windows setup, it will display your current hard drive partitions. Delete your windows partition, and format the drive
    then you're done
