It would be nice to not have to reinstall all the service packs etc, yet again.

in a nutshell yes you will need to install all the smaller updates again... the SP1a service pack you can download and save the network admin version which runs from you HD or CD rather than the internet update route

    SP1a http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/network.asp

their is one app which will once SP1 or 1a is installed allow you to install all of the smaller updates and Pre Sp2 updates and some OS tweaks in one go its called AutoPatcherXP .... I did use this the last time I re-installed XP and it worked great for me as I wanted to test it out as I had heard good things about it. http://www.autopatcher.com/WebAPXP.htm

In addition to what Halo said, if you don't have SP1/1a on CD, there is a compressed "ServicePackFiles" subdir of your Windows dir that you can save to another drive or burn to a CD that you can reinstall the SP from, so you don't have to download it again.
