Reformatting Computer ran into some problems

First of all, Happy New Years everyone! I hope everyone has New Years Resolutions and sticks to them (hopefully ;) Now to my question.

I was reformatting my computer for the beginning of this school semester to have it run clean. Reformatting usually runs pretty smooth, but ran into some problems. I put in the XP CD and started the usual formatting. When the CD got to the part of installing system documents (i think this part), my computer said it could not install files " shdocvw.dll and shdoclc.dll ". It then ask do you want to retry to install it, skip over it, or exit setup. I choose retry, but to no avail, still doesn't install, and then I decide to skip over both files. Now when everything is all done with, my windows won't start up. It says it does not start up right because it's missing shdocvw.dll.

I am now in the process of reformatting my windows again, but yet again, ran into the problem of having my computer saying it can not install shdocvw.dll and shdoclc.dll and when I click retry, does still not install, so yet again I have to skip over it. What can I do to remedy this problem of having my computer get these files and have windows bootup right?

Thanks in advance for your help. Spyware and Malware are absolutely vicious now a days.

Thanks for the quick reply Major Attitude! I will try that right now. What I did before was make sure the cd was clean when I put it in the CD-rom drive. (cleaning off the gunk on it, although very little but still did not read the CD) I figured downloading it would be the next best option.

I'll do this and post my results.

    Cheers,

I wasn't really sure how to "reburn" my windows XP cd. I would click on my CD Rom drive but it did not recognize that the XP cd was in there. I then decided instead to burn shdocvw.dll on a CD and when it did ask for " shdocvw.dll " i was just going to put the burned copy in the CD Rom drive. When my computer then said it couldn't find shdocvw.dll, I put the burned CD in my CD Rom. It still did not find shdocvw.dll. I put back in my Windows XP cd and asked for it to "retry" to search for it. Still could not be found. I'm really not sure what the problem could be.

Any other suggestions on what to do? I'm stumped and have never ran into this problem before.

You need a CD writing program. Worst case, download Nero demo from here and do a "cd copy". Try to copy the shdocvw.dll to the hard drive and see if it will take it from there.

    Update:

I now have shdocvw.dll in my windows - system32. I had to use task manager (thats all I can use) to copy, then paste it in the system32 folder. I then restarted it and was happy to see no "windows might not start correctly because it does not have shdocvw.dll" popup. Now I get it to windows, but no tool bar or anything and once again, can only use task manager. Basically the same thing I got before, but without the popup saying that I don't have shdocvw.dll. I'm really confused because this has never happened before. I was thinking this morning it would be a quick reformat no problem type deal, but this is starting to become disastrous.

Once again, any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much Major Attitude. Hopefully this problem doesn't result in me having to bring it in the a local computer shop to pay to get it fixed.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    Latest Update:

I still can only access task manager. I have no desktop icons or start menu. Not really sure what to do from here. Been googling my problem to no avail for the fact that I reformatted my computer and everyone else that has this same problem is usually just a spyware problem.

When you get into task manager, can you click on File, Run, then type in Explorer (press enter).

    Does the normal desktop showup?

On a very similar situation that I did way in the past. I actually, formatted (Fat32) my computer, then copied the entire i386 directory onto a folder/directory on my hard drive, using a win98 bootdisk with cd support.

Then I ran setup from within the directory itself. After xp was installed I deleted the directory.

Hey theefool, thanks for your reply. Seemed simple enough and tried it. The start menu flashes for a second, then disappears. I then typed it again and the same thing happens, start menu flashes then disappears. Hopefully that tells us something important so we can narrow down the options of what this might be a case of. Thanks again but any other suggestions?

I've also reformatted my computer again and again hopefully this time something will work. Nothing changes though, still says that it can not read "shdocvw.dll" from the CD. Still can't seem to get this to work.

Have you tried my 2nd option?

    Also, does safe mode work?

If the explorer shell appear then disappears, this reminds me of a few links I have at work that may fix this. But, alas, I'm not at work.:(

Since this is a FULL format and re-install, I'd try my 2nd option, or try someone else's xp cd (with your key).

Not really to sure what you mean by the 2nd option. I'll see about maybe formating it in Fat32 and see what that does. I don't have a win98 bootdisk though. I'll check later on to see if any of my friends have another XP cd. This cd should be fine.

Last night I was thinking about it and it could be a virus problem. Since I can't use anything other than the task manager, is there a way I can scan my computer if a burnt a virus scan on a disk, installed it through task manager then had it scanned using task manager?

Also theefool, no it does not work in safemode.

All thanks for your kind support. Hopefully I can get this figured out before some of my major assignments are due.

Any suggestions anyone? I want to know if i can scan my computer by only using a task manager (thats all I can get to work) I think my problem might be virus related. Thanks for your support in advance.

You can do online scans from your browser to test for viruses, etc. There are links in the Malware forum under the tutorials. I would still like to see you copy that CD from a cd writing program (not Windows cd writing) or take it somewhere and have a friend copy it. Were in a loop here now, so try that.

Major Attitude - thanks for your great advice. I borrowed a cd from a friend and now my laptop runs great. The only thing is that now that I did a clean reformat, the CD key under my laptop won't work. I called them up and now need to get a new CD from Sony or buy Windows XP. Kind of sucks but thanks for the advice. You made me a very very happy man - mike
