Refresh rate override. Why?

I recently rebuilt my main system with MSI K8 NEO4 SLI, Gigabyte 6800gt and a Venice core 3200+. Nice and fast, but when I reinstalled some games and went to run them, I got a quick monitor message including "Status: over" and then a black screen, requiring manual shutdown.

Some google work led me to download the refresh rate override from Nvidia. After setting all of the different resolutions to 75hz in the override and 60hz on my display properties, everything seems to be working.

I guess my real question is, why the hell do I have to do this? I had no problem with my 9800 pro or any of my previous nvidia cards while using this monitor (Viewsonic a90f+ 19" crt). This fix seems slapped on and untidy. Am I doing something wrong?

    ps. 2000 Pro, sp4. 77.72 drivers.

Your games were trying to display in a resolution or refresh rate not supported by your monitor.

Why would that be? The game, Vampire TMB, displayed properly on my previous setup, which used the same monitor.

could be a bug, I know for my bro's PC BF2 tryed to launch with refresh rate at 200mhz! I had to delete the profile under my documents to get it to work again.
