Refused WU?

    Hey guys,

I know it's probably nothing, but I just want to make sure since i'm still faily new to folding. Last night I finished a WU as per usual, and everything seemed to go fine, there were no errors in the WU. but when it tried to send the WU the work server kept actively refusing the WU all night. It tried about 30 times to send the WU and every time it tried to send it, it was actively refused.

This morning it sent perfect on the first attempt, and I got full score with no errors.

Could it just have been a hiccup with the new Beta or a busy work server? Or do I need to check some setting out?

They've been having some issues with their servers lately, actually quite often as servers go, not your fault. They're also installing new servers so that may be a part of it, Bookmark this page.

Yep.. My server has a great big yellow box that says DOWN beside it.. lol

    Thanks augie ;)

You're very welcome.:) As you can see, they have a lot of servers . I wouldn't want to manage that lot!:-D

Most definately not lol. they must have a full-time crew just to keep all the servers maintained and functional. Or they probably just get the university kids in the Tech courses to do it all as part of their education. Free maintenence :-D

I would love a course like that, working on the "worlds largest super-computer's" servers. I would fight tooth and nail for a spot in that class :-D

That might also explain the high problem rate with the servers. Students tend to make mistakes while they learn, thats how almost everyone learns. And those mistakes would reflect in the reliability of the servers.

guess we better head out to the libraries and start installing clients on every PC :-D

Ya, at $500/copy =$13.5K US, that is insane! He must be a bigwig at a data centre as he was able to get an electrician to route in more power and is not paying for the power. Here's a pic when he 'only' had 18 i7's. Quite impressive really.

Wow.. finally finished my 11th SMP2 WU.. and after reading up i'm entitled to bonus points.

So what happens? the server refuses me again... :banghead

    I love my luck lol

does this cost me any points at all? Or does the client record the finish time and award points based off that time?

First off I don't understand why you are having problems uploading WU's as I am sailing along as long as I don't turn off the console client(s),which I do from time to time to play an antiquated online game (MOHAA)

there is a flag I use should I have a problem with uploading a WU which is -send all ,thereafter removing that flag after viewing the log file to locate "[18:45:57] + Results successfully sent
[18:45:57] Thank you for your contribution to Folding@Home." on the WU in question.

as to losing points my understanding is the work unit has to be received by the collection server to be counted which means on time or within the alloted time fame, the sooner the higher the bonus points.

    beginners luck? :confused

The good thing is that particular server is now fully operational.

I wonder what has happened to Stanford's backup strategy because usually another server will collect it.

From now on were I you I would post here concerning down/not accepting servers,so it can be looked in to,which as I recall happens on the weekends when very few network people are around to re boot the server in question.

    serverstat

Well this would be the 2nd time it's happened to me. I'm not quite sure why it's happening, but this time It's been trying to upload for almost 48 hours and no luck.

From looking at the log I can see it's trying 2 different collection servers, both of which are apparently refusing it because they are in standy mode.

All I know is that those points for the WU are toast. I will see if this next WU goes through and dump the problem WU if it's sucessfull. It this next one gets stuck as well, I'll try uninstalling and re-installing the client, re-set all flags and config. and start from square #1.

The last time this happened it was stuck for about 24 hours before it went through automatically.

Yep, This last one just sent without a hitch. I will notify the F@H guys about which WU is stuck.

In the meantime, I'll just keep folding away and see if this dead WU does anything. If it's still here in couple more days I'll dump it. It's using my precious cycles trying to send every few minutes :(

I've seen that error maybe twice in the last six years. Also, I agree with noprob, post in their forums with issues like this, you can't get any better help anywhere than there for these types of problems. Will you be registering with the same alias as here?

This problem has been going on for the last few days (since wednesday) with this server.

    http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=18555

"There's nothing that can be done to fix the old Collection Servers that are off-line (including 171.67.108.25) so reporting problems associate with it is a waste of time. Those servers were running an old version of the Server code which is incompatible with the new server code. We can deal with problems associate with the primary Work Servers."

Just the luck of the draw.. I got the short stick :(

  22. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Damn man that sucks real bad!:( Looks like nothing much will be done with that/those servers, but it begs the question 'Why are they sending out WU's for that server in the first place then?' I'm totally confused here.:confused I'm going to readup on this.

  23. Nico_Palm

    Nico_Palm Specialist

The supply server probably needed to be programmed to stop issuing WU's assigned to that collection server. Some WU's were probably already generated and waiting to be picked up before they knew of this problem.

I picked mine up on wednesday, right before the first post on F@H's forum about this issue. I'm pretty sure that by thursday the servers were no longer issuing WU's assigned to that collection server, as my new WU's are going perfect at 1400-1500PPD with my bonus :)

Now I will be trying the -advmethods and a larger packet size after this WU to see how that affects my PPD.

  24. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Ooh man, you're getting a bonus! I learn something new every day.;) That's quite a jump in PPD!:dood:wine

  25. Nico_Palm

    Nico_Palm Specialist

indeed.. roughly 225% of my previous PPD before bonus :drool

Now I cant wait to get it running @ 3.6-3.8Ghz on the new board with this GPU. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133391

I know it's a budget GPU, but it's a pretty good card for $60. And it's better than what i'm using now which is nada. Plus it's cheap, and i like to OC, so if I burn it up it's easily replaced :-D

  26. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

I get some 6>7K with my stock 260 so you shouldn't be too far behind that with the OC. 22 ambient outside but damn warm inside with my 4 GPU's!

  27. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Remember, push the shaders first and everything else maybe %5 using Afterburner as more than %5 doesn't give much extra PPD except for useless heat, after that you're on your own.;) Keep the fan on AUTO.

  28. Nico_Palm

    Nico_Palm Specialist

Those are some decent numbers for a cheap GPU :) But I see yours is a GTX and the one i picked is just a GT.. will that affect it much?

I'm right on the ontario/quebec border near Cornwall, it's 24 ambient currently, and 30+ with the humidex. I turned on my 2nd intake and exhaust fans today and I think I might need some noctua's or something a little quieter than the cheap fans i'm using ATM.

My rig sounds like a microwave oven right now.. but at least it's cool. :cool

That GT 240(typo?) should get around 4K PPD at stock as does my 9800GT as it only has 16 more cores than mine, I'm getting out of my league now, sorry I can't help you more.

Hah yea, thats a typo, I dont know how I got GT-260 stuck in my head.. she's a 240 lol :-o

and 4k is good enough for me, combined with my CPU that puts me over the 5k PPD mark which is my goal for this machine for now. Then it can be my 24/7 folder while I work on building the next one. Eventually networked and running in unison :-D

Thank God hydro is included with my rent ;) lol

Sorry for bringing you out of your league lol, I googled F@H GPU PPD chart and a thread you posted somewhere else is the first link ;)

Yea I wasn't getting any bonus, so I was giving it 6-8 hours downtime a night. So I have a few PPD left in my proc still.

It gave me time to do fan work and get my HD's set up and do some wire management inside the case to improve airflow and all the other little details that usually get neglected, Plus some sleeping time.

I also just installed a new PSU the other week and wanted to be awake if it decided to nuke itself lol. I had one go while I was sleeping before, and it wasn't funny. There was some loud crackling that woke me up, then an 8-inch fireball and sparks erupted out the back of the tower. Talk about getting woken up rough :-D

It was a Bestec and I knew nothing about Bestec PSU's back then. It took my old MSI board with it as well.

LOL @ conflagration!:devil That's one reason I always pay the extra bucks for a good PSU, sure it costs maybe triple the cheap crap but it won't take out one's machine! I sure as hell don't want to lose my expensive rigs because I'm cheap on the PSU! Lose $1K for $40 bucks man? Never!

As I've read somewhere, (forget where, could have been here)

"Using a cheap PSU is like using a used condom. Sure it works, but is it really that good of an idea?" :-D

I have to admit though, i've heard alot of bad about Rosewill PSU's, but I've been using their RV2-600 model for almost a year now on an old Athlon x64 3200+ and it's never had a problem. I would buy one again, but not for anything high-end mind you.

At least it wasn't due to nan's, which means too much OC usually on GPU's, I never had a bad WU though. If they ban you for 24 hrs. then cut some MGHz off the CPU. Damn man, that's some real bad luck!:eek

Ya one of my first WU's when i started out gave me an UNSTABLE_PC error. I dropped my OC to where it is now and haven't gotten one of those since.

This was my first BAD_WU though, that i know of anyway. there could have been 1 or 2 that slipped past when I wasn't around. I will go do some reading about what that error could possibly mean and start eliminating causes lol.
