    I have Registery Mechanic.

My friend who is currently in school to be some kind of Network admin told me they are a waste of time and money.

To be honest, he is wrong about a lot of things a lot of the time; but he is right the odd time.

Is there any substance in his opinion. Does Registery mechanic make a actual difference.

I use RegSeeker. It's free, so it's definitely not a waste of money. And since an average scan usually takes only a couple of minutes, I can't see how it would be a waste of time, either.

When you uninstall programs, delete folders and make other changes to your system, registry entries are almost always left behind. The more useless, dead entries left behind, the more it will bog a system down. A decent registry editor/cleaner can make a huge difference in how a system runs.

I tried Registry Mechanic some time ago and wasn't impressed by it doing anything any free cleaner wouldn't do.

Well, that's good to know. Thanks for your imput. I found 186 problems today. My record is 422. Not sure if that is considered "a lot"? Oh well.

I actually use several Reg Cleaners. One is not enough. They each seem to find different registry problems (e.g., Regseeker, Registry Mechanic, Registry First Aid, Easy Cleaner, System mechanic.

Yes they are well worth it.

Yup, the Registry is probably the biggest Achilles heel in Windwoes (the way .DLLs are handled is the other biggie). Way more complicated than what's needed to do the job. Always be sure to back the registry files up before making changes (a good registry fixer will take care of that for you first thing).

I think that doing a registry cleaning every few months and after a major uninstall can keep things running smoothly. I use the Registry tool that comes with SystemSuite 6 Pro (currently available for $15. AR thru Amazon) but some of the free ones can do a good job for you as well.

I'd suggest CCleaner for frequent cleaning, it's very fast and does a reasonably good job; I run it daily. At longer intervals run your dedicated Registry scanner(s) to get the few things that CCleaner misses.

I use CCleaner, and Registry Defragmenter. And if CCleaner removes something it shouldn`t, WinDoctor fixes that.

I use Ultra WinCleaner One Click and CC cleaner.
