Anyone know anything about REG.EXE? When i log into my Windows 2000 home pc, it shows up as a process in Task Manager. While it is active, you can barely use the PC as CPU usage is at 100%. If you do nothing for 10 minutes or so, it goes away on it's own. Fortunately, you can also "End Process" immediately without apparent repercussion.

I first noticed it because every log-off attempt (which I did to try and speed up the slowed down pc) would reference it and prevent a log-off.

As i said, know real harm since it will go away by itself or it can be closed via task manager.

It apparently has something to do with the Registry.

Try getting "Startup Control Panel" and seeing what is allowed to execute at startup.

Also it wouldn't hurt to install, update, and run Ad-aware.

I'm willing to bet that its not the Microsoft utility doing what its supposed to.

Are you on a network (domain specifically)?

Thanks for the replies. No, I'm not on a network. Just my home pc with 3 different user profiles.

    Okay then.

If you've not updated an run your AV, you must do so now. If its a virus, the AV will probably detect it. Also, if you don't have it, download AdAware

As you're a windows 2000 user and therefore don't have MSCONFIG (Microsoft : Why? Oh why!?) go Start -> run -> regedt32.

Navigate on the left hand pane to this key :
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run]

Do you see any references to reg.exe in there? try looking in RunOnce in the same location (should be just under Run).

It does sound pretty fishy to me. The regular registry editor is regedit.exe. I recommend getting Adware and/or Spybot to scan your system, not to mention an up-to-date virus scanner.

actually, reg.exe is a command line utility to edit registry keys.
I recon its looping for some reason, or somthing is using it to change registry keys slientlly (or not so silently as the case may be :p)

Of course thats not to say that its not a virus calling itself reg.exe. Thus why I suggested to update and scan.

I've noticed the same thing on my system - it is excessively bogged down while REG.EXE is running. In looking through startup folders, it appears that reg.exe on my system is loading in \All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup as a "D-Link REG Utility".

I have on my laptop a D-Link Wireless card.

    Hope that helps.

    A useful Links I found that explained the D-link REG.EXE problem: http://www.computergripes.com/dlink.wifi.g.card.html

If you have an older laptop with a Texas Instrument PCMCIA adapter and install the D-Link DWL-G630 AirPlus G Wireless Adapter Utility, it will hang up and not finish the one time D-link registry update. Although your wireless adapter may still work, REG.EXE from the D-link subdirectory will execute each time you reboot, get hung up again, and causing your Win 2000 services.exe to us 90-100% of your CPU time. I removed the D-link REG.EXE from my windows startup and window and DWL-G630 works fine.
D-Link phone technical support knows about this problem, but has no website search information on REG.EXE, or FAQ reference to this problem. They just say your hardware is not compatible and you have to update you PCMCIA BIOS, not that REG.EXE is hanging up you system and cannot be detected by Virus scan or Ad-ware remover. Or provide any website support to notify you of the REG.EXE problem or a D-Link REG.EXE removal tool.
