region free dvd codes are they ok?

What do ya'll think about those region-free dvd codes that you can buy to make your dvd region free? I have dvds mainly region 1, some region 2 and one region 4 and I'd like to make my dvd player region free. However, I need to check with others about it. Someone tells me that if I do that I won't be able to play region 1 or 2 because they need to be played on 1 & 2 compatible players. Does anyone have experience of these?

I'm pretty sure region code hacking is illegal.

Maybe its just selling region free players.

That said...these codes are changing the firmware. So its at your own risk kind of thing.

I read somewhere that there was a court ruling that unlocking cellphones is not illegal now either.. maybe this will fall in the same catagory...

 

Humm? Didn't MG used to host a free utility? it was called something like Free Region? or AnyDVD?

 

PC DVD players can be changed a max. of 4 times, after which the code is set.
there are however utilities to get around this problem by "flashing" the players cmos. flashing the player is not recommended because it can make your player unusable.

 

Depends on the country. In Australia it is possible to legally buy region free DVD players because a court ruling over here stated that regionalizing DVD's was a restriction of trade or somesuch
