Hey guys, I'm trying to set it up so I can type in another language with applications other than those in Microsoft Office, and the menus I've been told to go through are as follows:

    1.) Control Panel
    2.) Regional and Language Options
    3.) Languages Tab
    4.) Details
    5.) Advanced Tab

Now on this tab, there's an option that allows you to extend text services to other applications, which would essentially allow me to type in other languages with non-Office applications, but that's the problem. For some reason I have no tab as you can see in my picture from step 5. I was told that if I log in as the Administrator I'd have this missing tab, but after rebooting in Safe Mode as the Administrator, I had no luck as the tab was still not there. If anyone knows a way around this or perhaps a step that I'm missing, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I followed those steps and I DO have that tab.
I 'm not sure why you WOULDN'T have it. You don't have a browser open when you go to it do you?

Yes, you need to log in as Administrator, but you need to have the speech recognition engine installed (SRE).

This only happens if you have Office installed, or you install XP Plus (Word 2002 and Excel 2002 also).

I run Windows XP Professional with Office XP installed  you're certainly on the money. So, if I go to www.microsoft.com and get the speech recognition engine, it may work? (for the record, i'm a computer geek in training ie. newb :) )

I went to www.microsoft.com and found what appears to be the SRE, but I'm a little thrown off by the wording of its description.

    "Speech recognition engines:

Speech recognition engines provide speech input capabilities for Microsoft Agent. At this time Microsoft provides a single U.S. English speech recognition engine for use with Microsoft Agent. To use this engine you should have a Pentium 120-MHz PC (or faster). Click the link below to download this speech engine."

I'm pretty sure this is it, but  I think I'm having one of those sped moments.

    You should already have that.
    I did additionally install:
L&H (Lernout & Hauspie TruVoice American (you can select other languages)English TTS Engine

Well, I downloaded and installed what I believed to be the SRE that you mentioned Insomniac, but I'm still a no go for that extra tab that's missing on my computer. :(

Well, I still can't get the advanced tab to show up as the Administrator, but I made excellent progress just a while ago~

The main reason I've been having these troubles is that I've been downloading Global IME for Office XP instead of just installing languages from my Windows XP CD since the languages installed from there should work with all applications if I'm not mistaken. The reason I haven't used my Windows XP CD is because my computer won't read it for some reason, but then I thought "what if my laptop can read the CD?"

So, I popped the CD in and success, it worked! So I whipped up a wireless network between my laptop and PC and installed the successfully installed the languages. As a test, I opened up Notepad to see if it would work, and sure enough it did, but with one little problem.

The language I'm trying to install is Japanese, and although it appears to have worked, the settings don't seem to be quite right. I tried to type a few words but they came out as if parts of the words weren't being read. As an example (for anyone who knows some japanese) when trying to type what should be "arigato" the characters came out as if i typed "aiao."

I tried going into the settings but it came out wierd, as you can see below:

So close, yet so far. Hopefully I'll be able to make this work soon~
