Regions and dvd players/home cinema systems

Right looking for a home cinema system, preferabley the speakers but doesn't matter and some are saying Region 1, region 1 and 2, and I don't understand it. Been looking on ebay for some surround sound speakers for dvd player in the living room for under £120 ($217) and they say region 2 only. Will it work on my dvd player??? Also, if someone could explain these regions or give a link which explains them because google couldn't help and noone around here knows

There are programs that will let you get around the dvd region codes. One that i can think of that is free is Dvd Decrypter
