Here I go walking thru the minefield again! Before monkeying with a cleanup program:

How do I backup the "registry"?

Which registry do I backup? A file search showed 17 different ones.

Do I back it up on a CD?

When the Bouncing Betty blows up my nether regions, how do I get things back to normal?

This is pretty much a generic question as I haven't decided which utility to try. Some have option to back up the registry for me, while others suggest I do it before deleting anything.

As always, thanks for your time and patience.

right, well - the registry is backed up on a daily basis for you.

If you have a problem - your best bet is to boot into safe-mode at the prompt. Then use.... damn - its been a long time since i used win98 - i can't remember the name. OK - but its in the /windows directory (i think, if not - try the system or system32 directories). Do a dir *reg*.exe. That'll produce a list of likely files. Try one of them - they allow you to restore a registry.

Other than that, for a slightly smaller scale approach, if you are going to change or delete a entry (in regedit) first backup that entry (its under one of the menus)

The registry is in fact 2 big files - user.dat and system.dat (again in the windows directory). At the very worst, you could copy those files to a safe location and if something goes wrong: boot disk, copy files back.

lol. its a racoon. or so the file name would have you believe. I can't remember where I got it from (the original is a larger, better coloured, full animation. I cut it down to fit the 8000B file size limit).

That critter is straight off the pages of National Enquirer or Weekly World News!! You should send it to them and start a world-wide hunt for it.

Bigger, full color, more animation...I'll pass!

Later - (now where'd I put my bottle......)
