I just downloaded and installed the free program RegSupreme. I ran the program and came up with 451 registry 'errors'. Is it safe to actually remove them all? I've created a system restore point, will that be enough if something important gets deleted? Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the registry cleaner that you're using but I personally would never work on the registry without first creating a backup. You can use Regedit to create a backup. Then "fix" the problems and ensure that everything works the way you expect. Once you're satisfied you can delete the backup of the registry - I myself wouldn't delete the backup but would probably put it on a CD so I'd have it just in case.

Someone else can probably tell you more about the use of restore points for this exercise.

You may also want to back up your registry before you do that. You can back up the registry by:

start > run > type "regedit" without the quotation marks. Go to the file menu and click "export". Save the file in a location you will remember!

If there is a problem during your registry cleaning operation, you can restore your registry backup by simply double clicking on the file and click "yes" when it asks you if you want to add this information to the system registry.

I've run many different regsitry cleaning programs through the years, pretty much deleting everything that pops up. The only real problems I've ever encountered have been with Microsoft Office being messed up (not beyond repair though).

Only times I mess with backing up the registry is when I'm either going to do a push. Or when I'm messing with HKLM\SYSTEM

Glad everyone has good luck with registry fixes but I, for one, have already fat-fingered the keyboard when messing with the registry and suffered for that. Creating the backup doesn't take long and is a safety net should something go wrong. Maybe I'm the only person who does manual edits and has fat fingers........... :p

I've had my share of mess-ups with the registry in the past. I've just been working with it for about 7 years. :)
