I was reading and posting in the hardware section, and on the bottom of the first page of hardware they had a "click" to a registry cleaner, "free". I love free. "Reg Clean" so I downloaded and ran the scan. It said I had 1770 entries needing fixing. So I did the free scan. They only repair 2 and you buy for the rest. So I went to the Major Geek's list for registry cleaners and found "free windows registry repair". As I said I love free, so I downloaded and ran it. It said I had almost the same amount over 1000. So I clicked "repair" and it was able to repair all but 6 which had "protected after it. All for free. Then I reran the Reg Clean and it said I still had 560 fixes and then directed me on to buy. I then reran the "free windows registry repair" and I still only had the 6 which had "protected" after their listing. Who do I believe?

    I prefer Advanced Windows Care.

First time you run it, it is going to frighten hell out of you with thousands of "contradictions". It will "find" lots of "errors" until it loads it's own up-to-date database.
I click on Repair and let it do it's own thing.

Each time you load a subsequent update it will find lots of "errors", once again until it loads it's own database.

It also checks a lot more than Registry errors, as well. Bazza

I downloaded Amust Registry cleaner. Have no clue as to what it found, how can I be sure it isn't getting rid of something I need, or at least want?

You can either a) research every key that it is going to remove so you can pick and choose
    b) backup the registry before removing anything so that it can be restored in case something goes wrong.

See this link for instructions on how to backup the registry manually if your application doesn't do it for you.

Another suggestion might be to use CCleaner's registry cleaner. It is not as thorough as other registry cleaners, but it is by far the safest I've ever used; it seems to be limited to only innocuous parts of the registry.

    Ahh, I see now.
Honestly, cleaning the registry to boost performance won't give you much of an improvement, unless by chance it corrects a problem with a faulting application that's killing your system.

Two things I can immediately think of to improve performance is to ensure you're malware clean by following the steps in the malware removal thread, to ensure no nasties are slowing you down (as they often do), and following the steps in this post to lower resource consumption. (I realize this advises you to manage startup programs, and you've already tried, but perhaps this goes into a little more detail). Don't worry, both these guides are intended for the non-technical user, so hopefully it's a little more than blah, blah, blah.... :)
