I've been using Auslogics defragger to defrag my hard drive with great results. I noticed that they also have a registry defragger and there are others listed in MG downloads area.

Should I regularly be defragging my registry or should I leave it alone? These programs claim to speed up your system.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    HI

I have tried that app and while yes the registry can become fragmented its not going to give massive speed increases in defragging it, well not that the human eye will notice.

But I would say run CCleaner and clean out your PCs Temps and run its Registry cleaner to remove old un-needed keys and then run the Auslogic Reg Defrag, but I think personally its something you could do every blue moon as its not a major speedup routine.

NTREGOPT is another tool for optimizing the registry. I have it installed and use it but not very often, since frequent use seems unnecessary.

Regular hard drive maintenance is highly recommended: removing junk files, temp files, unneeded cookies, and regular drive defragging is a good idea too. As for registry maintenance, the above suggestions are pretty much right on. Occasionally run CCleaner or Wise Reg Cleaner to clean out the 'dead wood' from the registry, and then run an optimzer on reg once in a while too. NTREGOPT is good; I use it once a month or month and a half. I also run Dial-A-Fix 2 or 3 times monthly just to keep my DLL files happy ;)
    Happy Holidays! :wine

    All these suggestions are good.
    But
How could a person save a program such as a defragger to a CD so that the program could be used on an old laptop that will never go on line?
Whenever I try to save a repair program to a CD or floppy - it does not work on the laptop. Any suggestions - besides the obvious one: get on line somehow?

    Hi Tommy

If the old laptop is compatible with the software then all you need to do is save the installer file to the defrag app be that for as this thread is on registry defraggers or HD defraggers to CD then copy and install it on the laptop.

Also Windows PCs have build in HD defrag, while not perfect they will do the job of space defragging the HD.

or http://www.majorgeeks.com/JkDefrag_d5542.html will run as a stand alone app off CD or HD, no installation needed.

Thank you. I was able to get a good copy on CD, but the laptop refuses to access it. Something I'll have to learn more about. Thanks again

Halo, I took your advice and cleaned up with CCleaner, then ran the registry defragger. No problems whatsoever. I think i will continue to defrag my hard drive regularly and defrag the registry once in awhile.

Thanks to everyone who responded with the great advice. :)

tommyellis, try dragging the defrag program from the CD and copying it to the laptop (right click while dragging it will give you the choice to copy here). Then try and run it.

What a great and novel idea! These miracle machines have no end of surprises.
What I am trying to do is resusitate an old compaq armada 7770 DMT - and then have it join the little wireless network that I set up in the attic(The attic is well supplied with good insulation). So far I have windows 98 installed and I will try to get Windows internet explorer 5.5 or 6 installed, so tthat my PCMIA card will work. Lots of fun.
    thank you

If you have Win98, then try the freeware defragger Diskeeper Lite http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207
It's perhaps the best free defragger around.

I've read somewhere (so take it FWIW) that some of the newer defraggers don't play so well with Win versions older than XP.
