Earlier today, my work pc (running xp pro sp2) started to act funny. I got this strange error message from quickbooks (its was a tiny box that said error at the top and that was it) I clicked ok and went on my merry way. About 15 minutes later, I got the same error from quickbooks but this time everything I had open froze and I couldn’t do anything but manually shut down the pc. Upon restarting, I got this message about the registry. I never touch the registry b/c im afraid of breakin something, so I don’t know what this means. Can anybody tell me what it means and why it happened? I mean it fixed it this time but next time I might not be so lucky? :confused

I'd suspect your manual shutdown. If you abruptly power off the system while it is in the middle of writing a file, or to the registry, corruption occurs. (Hence the importance of a UPS for servers). Sadly, there's no real visibility for these kinds of things while the system is frozen.

Looks like the system has recovered gracefully, but I'd want to look at these errors you're getting from Quickbooks, to try to prevent future crashes... is there anything in your event logs relating to Quickbooks??

Ok, that answers my one question but am I supposed to just wait and hope it will start responding next time? I cant really afford for my pc to
be out of commission for as long as it was this time. As for the logs which one do you want to see – application, security or system? How do I go about showing you? Thanks.

Well, if you can wait it out, by all means do, but I won't be the one to say that it's always a practical solution. All I'm saying is, if you have to manually shutdown, this is a risk you take. This is why I'm recommending that we look into making the system more stable.

Well, the application log is the one we'd be interested in. You can save it by:

    1. Right-click the log
    2. Select 'Save Log File As'
    3. Save somewhere on your system (probably .CSV is best)
    4. Attach to a post

Thanks :). I understand what your sayin and I guess I can try to wait a little longer next time, but I can only wait for so long!

Here the log you asked for (I tried to save it as .csv but its not a format allowed as an attachment, sorry).

In the meantime...you could try this:
Reboot or shut down PC quickly
For a one-click method to quickly shut down or reboot your system without the fuss of going through the Start menu, make use of the Shutdown command, a command line utility in XP.

Here's how you can set up a restart button on your desktop:

    1. Create a shortcut (Right-click on desktop, select New > Shortcut).

    2. For location, type the following:

    shutdown -r -t 0

    3. Click Next, enter a name for the shortcut ("Restart" is appropriate), and click Finish.

When you click your Restart shortcut, Windows XP will reboot *automagically*!

The "-r" switch tells XP to reboot. If you'd like the shortcut to shut off your PC instead, change it to "-s"; to simply log off, change it to "-l". The "-t 0" sets the timeout (in seconds), so up this value if you find the need for it. To force running applications to close, add "-f" -- be careful with this one!

For more information on Shutdown, type "shutdown" in a command prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), or search for Shutdown in Windows XP's Help and Support Center.

Nice one, Tim! That can be pretty handy. Never thought of doing it with a shortcut, always with a batch file. Much nicer!

From the event log, here is the error text of our offending entries:

    Code:
1002 - Hanging application QBW32.EXE, version 15.0.4010.469, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
Seems its the executable itself causing the problem. What is the product name of the version you're using? Quickbooks 2005? 2006? Corporate edition? If we can get any updates to this product, it may be advisable.

Failing that, a reinstallation might help.

Thats a great idea Tim but I could not access my deskop. Nothing would close or even minimize.. I mean everything was frozen, I couldn't even bring up task manager.

The QB version is QuickBooks Pro 2005.

Oh im not having any problems now but when QB froze I couldnt do anything but manually shut down.. which Mada said was probably the cause of my registry issue.
