Somehow a registry file was deleted . Everything runs fines....so do I need this file?
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current... it has symbols and question marks in it....like ????6'???? and so on. It isn't a 6 but looks like one with an arrow point at the top of it.
The window pops up at start up that the file is missing. Thanks for any info you have for me.

seems as if XP is looking for a file to run from the run hive of the registry and cannot obviously as you know find it!

get this small free app Regcleaner ( their are other registry apps available but I picked this as its an easy one to use ) then once you run it click Startup List and see if that jumbled up file name is their IF so tick and remove it, then re-boot.

just as a second thought do you use Antispyware programs? if not I would advise going here and reading through READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal as this maybe linked to spyware etc

 Well, I tried to delete it from the Systems Configuration Registry. Either I am doing something wrong or it is too stubborn to go away! Can you help?

if your using MSconfig to remove the startup it wont, it will only disable, you will need to use that registry program I listed to delete the key from the registry.

Download 'Startup Inspector for Windows '(available this site methinks) Install it - run it and then delete the offending thingo from there and see if that works.
Apart from that you may have to look for a malware file somewhere in your system.
    Hope this helps
