Is it possible to modify the registry (Win 2K) to make the computer think a hardware device is there when it isn't?

well, Im not sure I know why you would want to do this?

For the system to think a piece of hardware is present, it needs to be able to send control signals to that peice of hardware through IO addresses. If you "fake" a piece of hardware, by inserting the drivers for it, and registering its presence in the configuration files of windows, then windows itself will actually report an error (visible, normally by looking under the "system" properties accessable via the control panel).

The only way around this, that I can think of, would be to create a "fake" driver, that returns fake results when requests are sent to it. But even that is susectable to problems, because windows will still complain. Windows needs to know the IO address of the hardware, and when it cant find it, it will complain.

Maybe if you can tell us for what reason you need to do this, and maybe we can provide an alternative solution.

(btw if its for dongle hacking - for a piece of software - to bypass copy protection, it's best that you dont reply, lol)
