Registry Recovery - Event Id 26

I'm Running XP (5.1.2600) SP2 on an HP/Compaq nc6000. Periodically it goes into convulsions and displays an error indicating that one of the Registry Files had to be recovered from a backup copy.......

When I view the System log, I isolate the event to what appears to be an "application popup" that triggered the event.

The event viewer reports:

Event ID: 26
file name: ntdll.dll
file version: 5.1.2600.2800

Checked the "hash total" of the ntdll.dll in the win32 sub-dir and a backup copy in one of the patch install folders and they are identical - so i doubt i have a corrupt ntdll.dll.

Anyone have an idea what to do to identify the root cause?

 

Have you tried a chkdsk ? possibly a bad sector in that location of the disk.?

 

There are alot of different problems with source 'Application Popup' under event id 26. (See this link)

What is the description of the error?

 

Chkdsk reports no anomolies

 

I checked Eventid.net and found no match in the descriptions for error 26. See image attached for more info in this error. I'm a bit stymied by this one as it seems to be a generic "I HATE YOU" message. I apprecaite any help or guidance you can give....
