I have been having a lot of freezing up and crashing lately, and am considering buying one of the windows registry repair tools. Most claim they will repair all my problems. I am looking for opinions on what programs work the best. Anyone have any experience with these programs or maybe can recommend one?

I use "AMUST Registry Cleaner" found here

My registry cleaner and my backup software (Acronis True Image) are the only shareware utilities on my PC, all others are freeware. Like Fred said in his post, it can be dangerous making changes in the registry. When you do, always make a backup first so you can reverse any changes you make. Amust is a quality program with a good reputation for making safe alterations.

I have also had good results from CCleaner with its "Issues" tool. It is a drive cleaner but it will find orphaned files in your registry & it has its own built in backup option. You can find it here.

I am going to try CC Cleaner and look for the issues tool. Maybe that will help. I don't want to clean my registry anymore, as I have used Lexun, and regseeker. The crashing is random at best. sometimes I can play bf 2142 for hours, sometimes just a few mins before it crashes.

You use the words 'repair' and clean' as though you understand the difference.

Cleaners work on the assumption that there are all the correct entries in amongst the registry as well as redundant, duplicate and other anomalies, plus some recognise some malware entries. They can not put back or reset missing/ wrongly set entries that should be there. This second task is what repair is all about and is a whole world more difficult.

Windows has its own registry repair methods in system restore and booting to last known good configuration.

In your case I suggest you system restore to an earlier date, warts and all, and run Ccleaner on that.

Yeah- studiot is right. Reg cleaning and reg repair are two completely different areas. It's been my experience that most reg repair tools do not so much repair anything; they clean the reg of erroneous and dead and corrupt keys, and they tune up the reg by 'defragging' it like NTRegOpt does. Be very careful when messing with the registry; a wrong deletion can be disasterous. I personally only run a reg cleaner after I've installed and then uninstalled several different things over a short period of time (like trying out different programs, seeing that it's not what I want, and removing it). Then I run the cleaner to get rid of any leftover entries. I see no reason to spend money on any registry tools, there is such a variety of good free tools. Look into Wise Registry Cleaner (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Wise_Registry_Cleaner_d5437.html) and Advanced Window Care (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Advanced_WindowsCare_d4991.html). These two and CCleaner and maybe NTRegOpt (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/NTREGOPT_d4824.html) should be all you need for registry maintenance. ALWAYS make back ups of the reg BEFORE making ANY changes!

I ran CC Cleaner's issues tool, and repaired the 48 errors it reported. After looking at each entry to see what it was fixing. I'll see what happens, I have been online for an hour now, and no crashes. Yes I was looking for a repair tool, something that could look for and repair whatever is causing the trouble. Will the system file checker tool help? I probably have done too much cleaning. It seems to be video related, but updating the drivers has not helped. I wonder about my Via chip and Ati video card. My wife's machine has the same combination, Via and Ati, and hers crashes during games as well. She mostly uses the ps2 for her games now. I am running updated drivers on both machines.

I'l be plain because it might help you in future. It's always akward when someone brings in a pc for repair and tells me how to fix it, not what the symptoms are. Particularly if they have already tried (and failed) to fix it themselves.

Fiddling with the registry (cleaning) can do good, but I don't think is helping with your underlying problem, like sweeping the floor is good but doesn't fix the cracks.

I would guess you have yourself identified the problem, as video driver related. This is very common.

Windows has a process of safeguarding certain files, called protected system files. These are normally windows files but you can add to the list. It does not normally include graphics driver files. A utility called system file checker checks each one of these and can replace any it finds corrupt with a stored good copy or original from the windows cd. You can do no harm by running it.

    start>run>typein
    cmd
In the black box which opens typein at the > prompt
sfc /scannow (note the double n)
Have your windows cd handy it will ask if it needs it.
Close all windows and Restart the pc when finished.

If the problems persist post again detailing the symptoms and we can help adjust the drivers, which I think are underlying your difficulty.

Sorry to have made things awkward, that was not my intention. I truly appreciate your time, and help. The first suggestion was to run CC Cleaner's Issues tool. I have done that, and It seems to have helped. I played BF2142 for two hours without a crash, and was able to surf the net right afterwards without rebooting or crashing. If running system file checker will do no harm , I will do that too. I am also very interested in the driver adjustments you mentioned. You are exactly right, if I had the knowledge to fix it, I wouldn't be seeking help.
