Registry

I have a damged Registry, my operating system is Windows 98, if i install Windows XP over it will i install a good Registry, can somebody tell me? I also would like to know how to protect my Registry in the future, cause i did not touch it myself, i guess i downloaded the wrong file. Thanks all for your time and imput.

 

Yes installing XP will install new registry or you could reinstall win98. The registry is a software file which can be backedup and replaced if it becomes corrupt.

 

But it has to be said that updating to XP will not be a wise move, only a clean install will ensure you stability and performance. This has nothing to do with your current registry, it's just good practise. Updating can pick up spurious registry keys and include them in the new XP registry so you may start with a registry that works ok but is already bloated with information it just doesn't need.

they werent contracdicting; the first poster told you that yes putting WXP onthe machine will remove the old registry and put in a new one; but the 2nd poster warns you that there is a risk of the old registry (and its problems) of floating over to the new install of windows XP IF you choose to select "UPGRADE" instead of a new fresh install.

Thanks the mc....but windows 98 restore only goes back three or four days, and my problem originated before that :-(
