Reinstall Internet Explorer 6 & Outlook Exp

I want to reinstall IE6 & Outlook Express but would like to have a few more details before taking the plunge. I read Microsoft's bulletin on How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP.

The main question I have: after IE6 and OE have been uninstalled, where will I get the software from to reinstall a fresh copy. The computer is Compaq Presario running Win XP Home SP2. No system disks were supplied with the computer.

My thinking is that I will download IE6 SP1 and save to disk before uninstalling the current IE. The thing is though, the download is only the iesetup.exe file and not the entire software.

If I run the iesetup.exe after IE has been uninstalled, will it be able to FTP or something to download the software and install it.

Any tips for doing this would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't provide what OS you are using, and this would be helpful in giving suggestions. :)

Actually information was provided, but I failed to read it, and feel like an idiot! :)

Coming from a totally non-geek perspective, I would say that before you muck around with uninstalling your browser, you better get a non-ie based one just in case something goes wrong and you need to come back here. I hear good and bad things about Firefox and Opera but if in the same situation you are in now, I would make sure that I had both installed first.

It's impossible to uninstall IE on an XP system, unless you use a 3rd party uninstaller.

There is a provision under (Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Remove Windows Components) to remove both IE and OE. I'm not sure that's what I need or want to do, but it is there.

I've been trying to make some sense out of the Microsoft Bulletin detailing the reinstall process.

Maybe I don't need to uninstall anything, just change the two applicable registry settings to "0" and then just download and run the iesetup.exe file.

The easiest way to repair them both is to use System File Checker.

Go to Start, run and type in sfc /scannow then click OK. (There is a space after sfc )

You will need your Windows CD.

It is also a bad idea. You need IE in order to recieve Windows Updates.

Compaq doesn't supply the recovery discs with new computers anymore. You should have a recovery partition and there is an option to save that to CD/DVD to reinstall the OS in case of hard drive failure. It's in the manual.

There are ways around Windows Updates that don't require Internet Explorer, but because it's so tightly integrated with the operating system, it's impossible to completely remove and may actually break it (the O/S).

There are utilities available that can repair Internet Explorer, like IE Fix, that may help.

Finally worked my way through the reinstall.

    Thanks for the help

AFAIK, all that does is remove the shortcuts from the Quick Launch and All Programs menus. It doesn't actually remove IE or OE from your computer (which, as others have already said, is not a good idea anyway).
