Reinstall Vista?

I posted the following message, got one reply, and I could not get it operational.

Windows says it cannot open an OCX extension and it cannot find out how to do that on the web. So, I am stumped again.

Is my best option to reinstall Vista Home Premium?

If so, what can I do to avoid this problem when I reinstall it?

 

You don't normally open an OCX file by "double clicking" on it, as it is typically an object file of an OLE custom control. If one of your applications can no longer "use" this file because it has "lost" it's registration, you can restore it by running the command:
regsrv32 substitute_correct_name_here.OCX
Since this is a CMD type command, the easist method to ensure it works correctly, is to copy the substitute_correct_name_here.OCX to the root of your C: drive, then open the Run dialog with
Start=>Run:regsrv32 c:\substitute_correct_name_here.OCX

prometheos, or anyone else, when I run 'regsvr32' a dialog box says the PC cannot find 'regsvr32'. The full name of the file I am trying to reinstall in the registry is MSCOMCTL.OCX.

 

Vista might need you to be Administrator, to run REGSVR32.EXE. I don't own Vista, so this is only a guess. However, the reason that the OCX didn't register in the first place may be the result of Vista protecting you from doing so. Running the original installation program at an "elevated security" level (Administrator) might solve this type of problem for you in the future.
