Hi I recently ran into some problems with my PC and I tried to reinstall it, but half way through the installation it stopped and said I was missing all these files. When I start it back up it goes to a black screen and says error missing init.d. Has anyone came across this problem before? Thanks for any information, I really appreciate it.

    Hi Hippo,

Are you reinstalling from a DVD? If so, you will want to go to the BIOS and make sure that the DVD is at the top of the boot order list. After turning on your computer, just mash the F12 key until your BIOS menu comes up. If reinstalling from a DVD, make sure that your DVD drive is on top of the boot priority list. Save changes. When you restart your computer, you should be able to restart a fresh Windows reinstall.

If the problems happen again, or if you are not reinstalling from a DVD drive, post back here. Someone will provide more assistance at that time.

Hi, thanks for the quick response. My buddy was working on it but I'll ask him about that and I'll post back here again as soon as I know. Thanks.

Hi again, I don't know if I could get this thread bumped somehow but my friend who was working on it told me that he did set the dvd to the first priority to boot under the bios the first time. It worked half way through but then it stopped. Any ideals of what it could be? Should he try the same process again?

It sounds to me like the disc you are trying to boot from may have missing or corrupt files.
Can you get another copy of the XP OS disc ?? (an original if you can, bearing in mind that it must be the exact OS that matches your version..i.e..home,media or pro... or your key will not work!!!), I would advise also, if you can get a lend of one, that you make a copy of it and put it away somewhere safe.

Yes, I would say clean the disc (I use the rub on my jeans method) and try again.

If that doesn't work you could try copying the disc. On a working computer use imgburn and the "Create Image File from Disc" option to copy the installation DVD to hard drive. Then use the "Write Image File to Disc" option to write the ISO file you just created to a fresh DVD. Then try installing from the new DVD. Many times this works.

Hey thanks for the quick response. If I don't have a copy of the disc would I have to buy the windows xp software? or is there a certain disc that they sell for re-installation purposes only? Also does it matter what service pack it comes with? I seen some with sp3 or sp2. Thanks for your help!

If I was you and Sach2's solution did not work, I would ask around friends to see if any one has a copy of the OS so you could lend it to install your system then make a copy of that disc. If you don't know any one you could look on the likes of ebay as people sell their old discs on sites like that, though you must be carefull as their are a lot a scrupolous people out there.

i found these depending on your location.....
