anyone know how to reinstall Xp Pro without going back to the original version and losing everything? some of my apps, including the OS apps, have lost some of their files

also; how do i get all of my file extensions reassociated to their appropriets if i don't know them?

Have you tried another restore date, in system restore?

i think there is no chanse to restore your windows working properly unless you have some images of your system, the most common is system restore as tunered has mentioned above. in future i'd advice you to make a full copy of your system every week with some of 3d party backup software, so if something goes wrong you can easily restore it.

to repair MBR, boot in comand promt and them type fixmbr[device_name], it will repair master boot record, read this for more info.

if your bios crashed, the only thing that can help is to reinstall it.

Assuming the problem actually is a corruption of the OS this should correct it:

If you have a WinXP CD, try a repair install of the operating system. I have recovered this way before.

Don't use the repair console - opt to reinstall Windows. Then the XP CD will scan for and find the existing install on the disk, and give an option to repair it. Select the repair option. This way you will not lose any files on the drive (I never have). You may have to re-install all the O.S. updates from the Windows site, however, that were released after your XP CD came out.

    Hope this helps!
