    I am trying to reinstall XP with the restore disk that came with the system. I have BIOS set to boot CD-Rom first and it boots and takes me to the program
    Symantec Ghost 7.0 and gives me these errors Cannot open R:\W1640.GHO
    Cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT, Invalid dump file If this problem persists, contact Symantec Technical Support at http://service.symantec.com
    does anyone understand this or know why the restore disk isnt working properly

    I thought Symantec was Norton software what does it have to do with a system restore cd for Windos XP?

    Who ever you bought the system from gave you a ghost image cd and not a restore cd. The cd you have is is a norton ghost bootable disc that is looking for an image set to a specific drive when booting. If you bought the system from a good dealer you need to check with them or contact the computer manufacturer. I don't believe they will be willing to send you the proper disc, but it is worth a try. If when booting from the cd you can choose which drive has the image to load from you can try pointing it to the cd drive. The only problem is an XP image is normally much larger then 1 cd. It should have 3 or more cds, depending on the amount of software that was installed.

    It would seem the restore disk is simply a ghosted image of the hard drive. Not uncommon. However, I was under the impression that you needed at least Ghost version 7.5 or later to properly image an XP drive. I'll have to check it out...

    Ok, here it is straight from the Symantec site:

    The following versions of Ghost are compatible with Windows XP:

    * Symantec Ghost 8.0
    * Symantec Ghost 7.5
    * Norton Ghost 2003
    * Norton Ghost 2002

    Note: Symantec does not provide technical support for older Ghost versions used with Windows XP.
