I have an unused office line that I would like to use for connecting to the internet. The only problem is that the phone jack is downstairs.

I am getting a laptop with 802.11g built in. Is there such a thing as a pass through modem that I could plug into the dowstairs jack and access via a wireless connection.

I am thinking along the lines of an access point with a built in modem I guess. Or maybe an external modem with built in access point?

Mmm, i dont think you can get standalone modems with built in wireless points. I suppose you could make a MiniITX computer with a couple of bits of hardware attached to it but thats really more trouble than its worth.

It would be easier if the line had DSL on it, then you could go with any of the hundreds of wireless dsl routers.

Compaq used to make such a beast, but I think that all such things have been discontinued. If you hae another machine in the office with internet access you could share that connection and use a wireless access point.

this review is from 3 years ago, probably can't find this unit, but it will give you an idea of what to look for.

basically you'd have to find a wireless router that still has a serial port, so you could attach an external modem.

You need to look for a Wireless Cable DSL Router with a serial port.

You fit an External DialUp Modem on the serial port and connect the Modem to the Phone.

For the initial configuration of the Router and Wireless you would need to connect the Router to a computer via Cable. Once it done you can put the Modem and the Router near the phone jack and Go (this of course is pending on the Wireless capacity to work well at the distance that you need it to).

The following page does not deal with Wireless but the idea of one of the options is the same.
