Remote Access between Laptop and Desktop

I have a desktop running Win XP Pro Service Pack 3, a linksys wrt54g router, and an HP laptop running Win 7 64bit. I am trying to gain remote access from the laptop to the desktop, offsite, using DynDns.

I keep getting a time out error. I have checked the port settings on the router and they seem OK. Portforwarding is open for 5800 and 5900. Am I missing something?

This configuration worked with my old laptop (HP Win7 32bit) but I can't get it to work with the new laptop. I am at wits end.

 

Using VNC right? The server is running on the desktop? Listening on those ports?
The desktop is running the DynDNS client? Is it updating the site?
Try going whatsmyip and check you external IP & using the IP to connect - just to test the IP vs the DNS.
In the router you have the ports forwarded to the desktops local IP.
You should have the desktops internal / local IP static, so the router knows where it is everytime.
Does the desktop have a local firewall? Are the ports open? Is VNC allowed access (if the firewall has program access).

Another test is after setting the static IP on the desktop, put it in the router's DMZ & see if you can connect.
You shouldn't leave it there unless it is well protected - the DMZ is wide open.

I did get my problem solved. The IP address of the host computer changed and I did not catch that. I have since set up a static address with the correct IP.
