    Hello,

Here's what I'd like to set up. I want to be able to access a single folder on my desktop computer from anywhere in the world using my laptop, netbook, or school computer. I need to be able to read and write files to this folder. I'm not interested in taking over my desktop computer in a remote desktop connection, just this one folder.

I will mainly be using this folder to store all my lab files so I have them accessible where ever I am. Is this possible? I have no idea where to start with this one so any help I can get would be fantastic!

    Thanks all

BTW all my computers run Windows 7 64 Bit, and my home desktop that I will be connecting to is sitting behind a linksys router.

Thanks! Looks like that might work out for me. In my search for a solution to my problem I came across some online storage systems as well. SugarSync lets me sync folders on the go. That might be the best option for me. We shall see! Thanks for your help!

How can you access the folder without establishing remote connection between your desktop computer and your laptop? You need to use 3rd party remote access tools such as logmeinrescue, gosupportnow, GoToMyPC etc. in order to remotely access your desktop computer from anywhere.

VPN connection is the safest, or you can use Teamviewer, or sync the folder with something like Dropbox, Box.com, etc.. I got in when Box.com was doing the 50gb storage, when iOS 5.0 came out, so I keep everything up there that also is mirrored on a 1TB pocket drive.

With Teamviewer, you do not need to install any software on the remote computer, just need it running on the computer you wish to access. Now the catch-22 is, the remote computer has to be on, in order to connect. This is where a NAS drive connected to your LAN, with it always on comes in handy, but also you need to mirror to a remote location, so that if something happens to the NAS, you still have the documents available.

I screwed up (on drugs due to threw out my back). What I meant by remote computer with no software, is the one you are using to connect back to your's, and as for the remote being on, the one that you are trying to access.

You need the Teamviewer software on your computer, but you can access your computers running Teamviewer, through the teamviewer.com website. Sorry for the mix-up, narcotics make you type weird thoughts.

You would need to have the ports open on the router that it is connected to. Dlink.com is going to have all of the info you need on that unit. If it is your personal unit, you have access to the administrator menu, you would have access to adding users that have outside access, same goes for the router it goes through.

I have a Cirago NUS2000, that I have my Toshiba 1TB Pocket hard drive on, and have it setup so that I can use Webdav to access it from afar, if needed.
